Part of the 11 By 11 programme
Islington Against Apartheid - An Anti-Apartheid Legacy Centre Workshop
This workshop explores Islington’s place in the global struggle against apartheid, focusing on people who lived, worked and organised in Islington and surrounding boroughs and the part they played in a much wider international solidarity movement.
Through local stories, students discover how people in Islington and across Britain supported the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, and how local action formed part of a much wider global movement.
The session highlights a range of people involved in the struggle, including the important and often overlooked contributions of women, using their stories to explore ideas of solidarity, allyship and what it means to stand up against injustice. Students are also encouraged to think about what makes someone a leader or a ‘hero’, whose contributions we remember, and why.
Through stories, discussion and creative activities, students develop their understanding of local and global history while building skills in listening, questioning, making connections and expressing their own ideas. Students are invited to respond creatively to the stories told during the workshop, either through guided writing or drawing tasks, and follow-on activities can be provided for teachers to continue developing the themes and narrative investigations.
Suitable for KS2, KS3 & KS4. Workshops last 60–120 minutes, depending on your timetable. We recommend 90 minutes and a maximum of one class at a time. We can work with multiple classes in one day, for example if you have a two-class entry.
This workshop is delivered in your school until January 2027.
