11 by 11: Union Chapel Organ from performance and composition to physical theatre

Suitable for KS2 :60 pupils max split into two groups of 30.

These workshops stretch across the art forms in acoustic composition and physical theatre. All centred around the organ, schools participate in both workshops in one morning.

The Science of Sound, led by Hannah Parry  

The organ offers the ideal opportunity to discuss the science of how sound is produced. Children will explore sound production through games and exercises involving listening, clapping and rhythms, comparing wood and metal pipes and examining the concept of air in pipes. They will also have an opportunity to learn about volume, stops and pedals, and to play the different manuals, using graphic scores they have created. Hannah will also play some famous pieces so they can hear the variety of sounds the organ can produce. 

Foundation Physical Theatre, led by Nadia Nadry  

A highly stylised physical theatre workshop exploring the idea of “being played.” Partner work will involve one child taking the role of instrument and the other as player. This will develop into a group piece, visually becoming a full orchestra. The group will also consider the organ and its structure and literally “become the organ,” physically recreating the pipes, blowers, keys, and so on. Children will also examine the sounds of the organ, creating a piece performed to an organ soundtrack. Learning outcomes include imaginative play, multidisciplinary skills incorporating music and movement, rhythm and harmony work, communication and performance skills, and group work.
