Daily Schedule&nbsp; 9:00-11:00&nbsp;Morning inductions+toolbox talks + excavation&nbsp;11:00-11:15&nbsp;Break&nbsp;11:15-13:00&nbsp;Excavation&nbsp;13:00-13:30&nbsp;Lunch&nbsp;13:30-15:15&nbsp;Excavation&nbsp;15:15-15:30&nbsp;Break&nbsp;15:30-16:30&nbsp;Teaching / toolbox talks&nbsp;&nbsp;We will meet at 9:00 each morning at the site gate in Drewetts' Park, if you are driving you can park in the Jarrow Hall overflow carpark opposite the museum (it will be kept open until after 16:30). We will sign into site and go through the site induction and risk assessment before starting to work. Work will end 15 minutes prior to the end of the day to give time to gather tools, finds, samples, belongings etc. and store them safely and appropriately.&nbsp; The day will end at 16:30.&nbsp; &nbsp;Equipment&nbsp;&nbsp;All tools will be provided by JAM. Volunteers should bring their own food for the day. Some snacks will be provided on site, but we cannot guarantee hot water for tea or coffee so a packed lunch and thermos is highly recommended. Please remember to bring water in a refillable bottle.&nbsp; Comfortable, close-toed shoes must be worn on site. Durable trousers are recommended, as well as a warm layer and waterproof. Shirts must stay on!&nbsp;&nbsp; Facilities and Accessibility&nbsp; We have access to the Church Cottage toilets while on site, to access these we will have to cross Church Bank towards St. Paul's Church. The facilities at Jarrow Hall (Hive) and within the Museum are also available to us.&nbsp;&nbsp; We currently do not have access to covered areas within close proximity to the site, so in the case of inclement weather we will likely make our way to Jarrow Hall. If the weather is deemed too poor to allow safe site access, volunteers will be contacted, and the day will switch to inside activities such as finds’ processing. In the event of a travel warning, the day will be cancelled.&nbsp; Access to the main trench will be sloped, however if there are any other access concerns you may have, please feel free to contact me or talk to me directly and I will accommodate these to the best of my ability.&nbsp;&nbsp; Risks &amp; Hazards&nbsp;&nbsp; Be aware that there are a few areas of risk that may be present on site; namely slips, trips and falls. It is important for volunteers to wear sturdy footwear to prevent this, however if you have any particular concerns of additional accessibility needs please contact me and we can accommodate this.&nbsp;&nbsp; PPE such as gloves and masks will be provided for volunteers.&nbsp;&nbsp; A copy of the site risk assessment will be available on site, and there will be a risk assessment talk prior to work for all volunteers.&nbsp;&nbsp; Key Responsibilities&nbsp;&nbsp; <ul><li>Support JAM in its research aims.&nbsp;</li><li>Engage with curious members of the public by answering questions and directing them to museum resources or staff where appropriate.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Ensure that the site and storage facilities are tidy, safe, and that tools are stored correctly at all times.&nbsp;</li><li>Adhere to JAM Health and Safety Procedures at all times.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Demonstrate integrity, honesty and knowledge to promote Groundworks’ culture, values and mission.&nbsp;</li><li>Deal with any public enquiries or volunteer issues efficiently and politely, redirecting as appropriate.&nbsp;</li><li>Be an ambassador for Jarrow Hall and JAM&nbsp;</li><li>Follow all instruction and policy both outlined at induction and introduced in the future.&nbsp;</li><li>Undertake training and development as required across areas including but not limited to historical and site knowledge, safeguarding, health and safety.&nbsp;</li><li>Any other duties and reasonably requested to fulfil the objectives of JAM, Jarrow Hall, and Groundwork.&nbsp;</li></ul>&nbsp;If you have any questions, please contact me:&nbsp; <a href="mailto:Lucy.mclay@groundwork.org.uk" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(70, 120, 134);">Lucy.mclay@groundwork.org.uk</a>&nbsp;

The time has finally come for JAM to be put to sleep for this season. We are looking for some extra hands to help as closedown and backfill site, so if you would like to come along for a day and help as hoick soil back into our trench, please sign up here! All tools will be provided, trousers and closed-toe shoes (not crocs) must be worn to take part.

<h4>Grounds</h4>Some areas of the farm and village have soft or uneven ground but the majority is fully accessible. Groundwork South and North Tyneside are making constant improvements to the site to be as inclusive as possible. The buildings in the Village area are reconstructions of early medieval buildings and have beaten-earth floors and high thresholds (to hold the thresh!) and unfortunately this means they are not physically accessible for all people. You can, however, get close enough to look (and smell) inside and should we have living history volunteers in residence, they would be delighted to bring it to life for you. <h4>Toilets</h4>Accessible toilets and baby change areas are available both in the Bede Museum and the Jarrow Hall building. We have baby-changing supplies available free of charge from reception. We now also have a compostable toilet with ramp access in the village. <h4>Wheelchairs and Disabled Access</h4>A complimentary wheelchair is available at the Bede Museum reception, subject to availability. Assistance dogs are welcome across the site however not during biosecurity for avian influenza due to Defra rules: PLEASE CHECK before your visit. <h4>Blue Badge Parking</h4>Jarrow Hall has reserved parking bays for blue badge holders adjacent to the Bede Museum entrance, available on a first come, first served basis. Mornings can be busy at Jarrow Hall, if you prefer a quieter visit then we recommend coming to visit 1pm onwards. <h4>Wellington Boots</h4>We understand that not all visitors can tolerate wearing wellies however access to the farm area is sometimes dependant on this if Defra require additional biosecurity in times of Avian Influenza threat. PLEASE CHECK if unsure. <h4>Sudden and Loud Noises</h4>In the main toilets there are hand driers which are powerful and quite loud. The accessible toilet does not hand driers so you might prefer to use that facility. Inside the main museum exhibit there are a number of motion sensors which trigger a sound track. Staff are happy to warn you of their position or even, with a little notice, disable the sensors for you. <h4>Mirrors</h4>There are large mirrors in the main toilets however the accessible toilet has a smaller mirror which we could cover with a little notice. The museum exhibit has a lot of glass display cases where reflections cannot be avoided. There is also a mirror inside the lift to the first floor. <h4>Outdoor Hazards</h4>We have a pond area outdoors and some very uneven ground surrounded by rope fencing which would not stop a determined curious person so please ensure that all vulnerable people are supervised at all times.&nbsp;Take Care!&nbsp;– Some of the animal enclosures have electrified fencing. <h4>Animals</h4>Please be respectful of them. Do not attempt to access the enclosures. Do not feed anything to the animals which has not been supplied by the staff. The wrong feed can be fatal. Some of the animals bite. A hand wash station is provided. Always wash hands before and after visiting the farm. Some people will need supervision and support to do this effectively. <h4>Hygiene</h4>Outdoor wooden picnic tables are provided for your convenience. We are unable to sanitise these effectively so use your discretion. Always wash hands before and after visiting the farm.
