Description

Project Overview

In this project you will learn to make a beautiful wooden automata depicting a boat at sea.

Starting by creating a wooden box which will hold the waves, you will then work with wire to create the mechanism to animate them.  You will cut and shape the waves and off-set them to create a moving sea when the handle is turned. When the waves move as you’d like, you will decide whether you want a boat or a bird or something else to sit on them, and you will make that.  Finally, you will have the option of adding other moving parts that can sit atop the box and be animated along with the waves.

You will learn the skills of accurate measuring and marking, sawing and joining pieces of wood and filing and sanding to create a professional finish.  You can leave the wood bare or paint your pieces, depending on how you want your finished piece to look.

At the end of the project you will have something to take home and keep which will reflect your skill, application and design.
