About Us:

The Gap Wales is a community-led organisation committed to improving wellbeing, inclusion, and access to opportunity across Newport. Through Newport Cycle Hub, we use bicycles as a practical tool for empowerment—supporting people to access affordable transport, improve physical and mental wellbeing, and build confidence through hands-on learning.

Our work brings together volunteers, community members, and partners to restore donated bicycles, reduce waste, and create meaningful pathways into skills development and employment.

About the Role

We are looking for a motivated and practical Entry Level Bicycle Mechanic to join our Newport Cycle Hub team.

This is a hands-on, developmental role focused on refurbishing donated bicycles so they can be redistributed to individuals who may otherwise struggle to access affordable transport. You will work alongside volunteers and community members, learning and applying cycle maintenance skills while contributing to a supportive and inclusive workshop environment.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone at the start of their career who is passionate about cycling, sustainability, and making a positive difference in their community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess donated bicycles and identify repair and servicing needs
  • Carry out basic and intermediate bicycle repairs and maintenance
  • Replace and adjust components including brakes, gears, tyres, tubes, and chains
  • Ensure all refurbished bicycles meet safety standards before distribution
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe workshop environment
  • Support and encourage volunteers of varying experience levels
  • Demonstrate basic repair techniques and share learning with others
  • Assist with sorting, storing, and organising donated bikes and parts
  • Keep simple records of repairs, stock, and bikes distributed
  • Contribute to community outreach activities, workshops, and events
  • Uphold health and safety standards at all times

What We’re Looking For

  • A genuine interest in bicycle mechanics and willingness to learn
  • Practical, hands-on approach with good attention to detail
  • Positive and supportive attitude when working with others
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Commitment to safety, inclusion, and community values
  • Interest in sustainability, reuse, and social impact

What We Offer

  • Practical, on-the-job training in bicycle repair and maintenance
  • Opportunities to work towards recognised cycle mechanic qualifications (where applicable)
  • A supportive and inclusive team environment
  • The chance to make a tangible difference in people’s lives
  • Experience within a growing community organisation and social enterprise setting
  • Mentoring and development opportunities as part of a structured programme
  • Opportunity to take part in a Youth Board, helping shape the future of the Green Careers programme and gaining experience in participation and decision-making

Programme Information & Eligibility

  • The Gap Wales, in partnership with Green Careers, delivers this role through the National Lottery–funded Sustainable Steps Wales programme.
  • This role is funded through the Green Careers Pathway programme, which supports young people to access employment in the green sector.
  • To be eligible for this opportunity, applicants must be aged 16–30 at the time of appointment, in line with programme funding requirements.
  • We particularly encourage applications from young people who identify as having a disability or long-term health condition and/or those from globally diverse backgrounds, as these groups are currently underrepresented in the sector.
  • All appointments will be made on merit and in line with equal opportunities and relevant employment legislation.

Why Join Us?

At Newport Cycle Hub, we believe bicycles are more than just transport—they are a gateway to independence, wellbeing, and opportunity. Every bike refurbished represents a practical intervention in someone’s life.

In this role, your work will directly contribute to reducing waste, increasing access to transport, and strengthening community connections across Newport.

Application Deadline: Friday, 17th July with interviews taking place in July.

For enquiries or to apply, please send your CV and a cover letter to byron@thegap.wales. Interviews will be conducted shortly after the closing date, with an expected start date of Monday, 3rd August 2026 (subject to agreement).
