The project was a Heritage Lottery funded collaboration between the University of Brighton and the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association who are based in London. The trail represents only a small selection of the rich and diverse sculptural heritage of Brighton, but we hope that you enjoy it

Old Steine

This 324-metre long structure twists and winds its way along Littlehampton seafront between two striking metal shelters. Located on Littlehampton promenade, home to a Quality Coast Award-winning beach, it’s officially the longest bench in Britain. The 9,000 multicoloured, reclaimed hardwood slats, which meander around lampposts and dip in and out of the ground, are engraved with hundreds of personal messages from the public. There’s even a marriage proposal in amongst them! The Long Bench was inspired by a number of ideas, including one from children at Connaught Junior School, who wanted somewhere on the seafront where they could all sit together. When Arun District Council asked the public what they wanted to see in Littlehampton, one of the top requests was also more seating along the seafront. So, award-winning architects Studio Weave got designing! The UK’s longest bench was built by Brighton-based construction company Millimetre Ltd between Harbour Park and East Beach café. It opened in July 2010 and can seat more than 300 people. In March 2012, Littlehampton Long bench became the proud owner of two prestigious architecture awards from the Civic Trust. At a ceremony held in Edinburgh, it won the Special Award for Community Impact and Engagement and was also recognised for Outstanding Contribution to the Quality and Appearance of the Environment.

It had a widespread reputation for its Regency connections&nbsp;which even extended to Hollywood. Arundel Castle

Wild Park is a 239.8-hectare Local Nature Reserve adjacent to Lewes Road in Brighton, East Sussex. It is owned and managed by Brighton and Hove City Council. It includes Hollingbury Castle, an Iron Age hillfort which is a Scheduled Monument, and Hollingbury Park golf course. The park has views over Brighton.

Whitehawk Hill is a 50.3-hectare Local Nature Reserve in Brighton, East Sussex. It is owned and managed by Brighton and Hove City Council. At the top of the hill is Whitehawk Camp, a Neolithic causewayed enclosure which is a Scheduled Monument.

Leechpool and Owlbeech Woods near Horsham are open all year and are free to enter. They are particularly notable for their contrasting wildlife. Leechpool is an ancient woodland covering 53 acres and includes Oak, Ash, Hazel, Hawthorn, Holly, Blackthorn, Sweet Chestnut and Scots Pine. Owlbeech consists of 55 acres of remnant heathland which is being encouraged back to its former glory, supporting a rare selection of flora and fauna.

Castle Hill is a 114.6-hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest on the eastern outskirts of Brighton in East Sussex. It is a Special Area of Conservation and Nature Conservation Review site. The northern half is a national nature reserve This is chalk grassland, which is a nationally uncommon habitat.

A cluster of small woodlands along the London to Brighton railway line from Preston Park station north to Coney Hill.Withdean Woods&nbsp;are a Local Nature Reserve&nbsp;and a valuable wildlife corridor in&nbsp;an urban area.The mature woodlands support a rich variety of trees including large beech, yew and holly. There is a diverse woodland bird community and native woodland ground flora in places.

It comprises 280 hectares of chalk cliffs, meandering river valley and open chalk grassland. It’s home to grazing livestock, rare flora and fauna and is a corridor for a large number of migrating birds.&nbsp; The meanders of the Cuckmere river flow through the Park and visitors can follow the adjacent footpath from the Visitors Centre to the coast. Situated at Exceat, near Seaford, East Sussex, the Park is well served by buses from Brighton, Seaford and Eastbourne, making it ideal for a car-free day out.&nbsp;
