Cody Dock is dedicated to transforming the Lower Lea River into a vibrant community space, offering a range of events and activities to engage and educate the public. Our focus on waterways, ecology, heritage, and arts & creative industries allows us to provide opportunities for individuals and groups to connect with nature, history, and the arts. Through our various projects, exhibitions, and interactive media, we aim to foster a sense of community and environmental stewardship, while also promoting creativity and cultural expression.

We collaborate with grant funders and partners to support our initiatives, ensuring that our impact extends to a diverse range of individuals, including local residents, schools, and community groups. By providing volunteering opportunities and educational programs, we empower people to actively participate in the conservation and celebration of the Lower Lea River. Our efforts contribute to the preservation of biodiversity, the promotion of artistic expression, and the cultivation of a strong, connected community.

Cody Dock will be hosting a day of talks and workshops on biological recording for both new and existing naturalists. We will be bringing together case studies, interested individuals and active recorders to explore best ways of recording wildlife and we'll then find out what happens to all of our data. Tea, coffee &amp; a vegan lunch will be provided. Please let us know of any other dietary requirements on your booking form. We’re continuing these very popular sessions&nbsp;once a month throughout 2024!&nbsp;We are looking for up to 8 people to help us monitor the invertebrates of the tidal River Lea. The presence or absence of certain freshwater invertebrates can tell a story of a water body’s health. Because some invertebrates are more sensitive to pollutants than others we can use them as “indicator species”. Assessing the types of invertebrates found indicates something about the health of the water body they have been found in. As the Lea is a tidal river it also contains brackish water so we will be developing a novel assessment of water quality based on the invertebrate community found here. <h3>What the volunteering opportunity will involve:</h3><ul><li>Kick sampling in the river.</li><li>Identification of invertebrate species.</li></ul> <h3>What the volunteering opportunity will involve:</h3><ul><li>Training in aquatic invertebrate species identification.</li><li>Experience in aquatic invertebrate sampling techniques.</li><li>Confident canoers and kayakers will accompany volunteers on the water.</li><li>Access to our Biodiversity Officer</li><li>Access to and training in the use of a stereo microscope.</li><li>All necessary equipment and any required PPE.</li></ul> <h3>What we’re looking for from our Aquatic Invertebrate Survey volunteers:</h3><ul><li>An interest in biodiversity/ecology/entomology.</li><li>Enthusiasm for the project &amp; the objectives of Cody Dock. </li><li>This event is 18+ years only </li></ul>
