The Maya Centre is a community-based charity in Islington providing free, culturally sensitive counselling, group work and complementary therapies for women.

A 10-week therapeutic group that offers a safe and supportive space to explore the impact of family relationships and past experiences. Starts October 2026Mondays | 12:30pm–2:00pmVenue: Islington Together, we will reflect on how childhood experiences, family roles, attachment patterns, abuse, bullying, conflict, and relationship dynamics may continue to shape our lives today. Through shared learning and guided discussion, participants can develop greater understanding, self-compassion, and healthier ways of relating to themselves and others. <h2>What Will We Explore?</h2>This group may be helpful if you would like to better understand:<ul><li>Family trauma and family conflict</li><li>Childhood trauma and adverse experiences</li><li>Toxic or unhealthy relationships</li><li>The impact of abuse, neglect, or bullying</li><li>Attachment styles and relationship patterns</li><li>Boundaries, communication, and self-worth</li><li>Family roles and expectations</li><li>Personal choice, autonomy, and identity</li></ul>Participants will be encouraged to explore how these experiences may influence:<ul><li>Adult relationships</li><li>Family life and parenting</li><li>Separation and relationship breakdown</li><li>Self-esteem and confidence</li><li>Coping strategies and emotional wellbeing</li><li>Feelings of responsibility, guilt, or obligation within families</li></ul> <h2>What Might You Gain From the Group?</h2>We recognise that every woman’s experience is unique. Instead, it is about creating space to explore experiences, develop understanding, and make informed choices that support wellbeing. <h2>About Group Therapy</h2>Group therapy is a safe and supportive form of counselling where women come together to share, learn, and grow.Like one-to-one counselling, group therapy offers a space to talk openly about your experiences. What makes group therapy unique is the opportunity to connect with others. Some women may have experiences that feel familiar to your own, while others may offer different perspectives that help you see things in a new way.Many women find comfort in knowing they are not alone and discover that hearing and sharing experiences can be a powerful part of healing.All sessions are facilitated by qualified female therapists with specialist experience in supporting women and leading therapeutic groups. <h2>Who Is This Group For?</h2>This group may be suitable for women who would like to explore the impact of family relationships, childhood experiences, or family-related trauma in a supportive therapeutic environment.Whether you are currently navigating difficult family relationships or reflecting on experiences from the past, you are welcome to register your interest. <h2>How to Register Your Interest</h2>To attend this group, a self-referral is required.Self-referrals help us understand your needs and assess whether this group is the most appropriate support for you.
