The Maya Centre is a community-based charity in Islington providing free, culturally sensitive counselling, group work and complementary therapies for women.

This group is for Black and Black Mixed women living in Islington who want time to pause, breathe, and reconnect with themselves. The group runs for 13 weeks and offers a culturally safe and welcoming space, rooted in liberation and care. Through gentle drama and creative activities, you will be invited to explore your feelings, share your story if you wish, and be witnessed by other women who understand your experiences. Together, we will focus on:<ul><li>Building a sense of safety, calm, and grounding</li><li>Learning ways to manage strong emotions and stress</li><li>Reconnecting with self-worth, identity, and your voice</li><li>Exploring boundaries, consent, and healthy relationships</li><li>Reducing feelings of shame and isolation through sisterhood</li><li>Supporting choice, confidence, and access to wellbeing resources</li></ul> This group is about healing at your own pace, being seen and heard, and finding strength in community. You are welcome just as you are. What is group therapy?Group therapy is a safe and supportive space where women come together to share, learn, and grow. Our groups are led by qualified female therapists who often have specialist training and extensive experience in running therapeutic groups. If this feels like something you need, we warmly invite you to make a referral. Spaces are limited to keep the group safe and supportive.

In-person

Join our gentle 8-week holistic space for women. Facilitated by Aditi Kaushiva from Move to Thrive. This is a holistic space for women to reconnect with their bodies, regulate the nervous system, and release emotional tension through mindful movement, breathwork, and creative expression.Sessions are fully adaptable — accessible for all abilities, including chair-based movement and guided visualisation for those with physical or mental health challenges.Simple props such as scarves and cushions will be used to support expression, play, and accessible movement for all participants. Each session blends:<ul><li>Gentle breath-led grounding and sensory awareness</li><li>Mindful movement and expressive dance</li><li>Thematic exploration of emotions and embodied metaphors</li><li>Integration and reflective sharing for connection and calm</li></ul> Session Themes:1.Embodying Space &amp; Confidence — Finding power and presence through animal spirit metaphors.2.Joy &amp; Laughter — Movement meets laughter yoga to awaken playfulness and lightness.3.Releasing Anger &amp; Frustration — Energy work through dynamic release, using safe props (e.g., cushions).4.Fear &amp; Courage — Exploring freeze, fight, and flight patterns through embodied awareness.5.Peace &amp; Stillness — Breath-led calm, soft movement, and guided mindfulness.6.Love &amp; Beauty — Flowing feminine movement, gratitude, and gentleness.7–8. Deepen integration or focus on creativity and collective joy.
