Action for Silk Stream - River Action Day

<h2>💻🌊 Join Oxford’s data-driven hackathon to tackle the future of our rivers.</h2><h3> </h3>Rivers are in crisis. Across the Thames basin, only 6% of rivers and streams are in good ecological condition. From sewage and agricultural runoff to droughts, floods, and microplastics, our waterways face a storm of complex challenges. But hidden in the flow of thousands of collected data points lies the potential to turn the tide. Hack the River invites coders, data scientists, designers, and environmental problem-solvers to unleash their creativity and technical skills on real-world river data. Over two weeks, teams will dive into the open-source <a href="oxfordrivers.ceh.ac.uk" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Oxford Rivers Portal</a>, select pressing “wicked questions,” and develop data-powered insights and solutions that can drive real change. You’ll form teams at the kick-off session on 13th November, collaborate intensively over 13 days, and pitch your findings to experts from across science, policy, and conservation at the closing session on 27th November. Winners will receive a cash prize and all participants may have their work showcased on the Oxford Rivers Portal — shaping the future of river health. Join Our Community Workshop: Your Thames, Your Voice: Exploring Belonging, Access and Community Power along the River Thames Thames21 in collaboration with community partners are hosting an interactive focus group for communities in Tower Hamlets regarding their relationship with the river and waterways. This event will explore how people experience these spaces - what they feel is welcoming, how it could be improved, what they wish to see, how to make these spaces more accessible. We will discuss issues around access, infrastructure, belonging, social opportunities, upkeep and maintenance to the space and much more. This is a chance for you to share your experiences, ideas, and hopes for the river, and to help shape how riverside spaces can become more inclusive for everyone.

Despite its urban surroundings, Thames Road Wetland which sits within the Green Belt, is part of a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation, making it one of the best sites for wildlife in London. It is home to national, London and Bexley rarities including stately MarshSow-thistles, tiny Brookweed, Water Voles and Harvest Mice along with a wide range of invertebrates and birds such as Water Rail, Cetti's and Reed Warblers. Wetlands like this are crucial for biodiversity and play an important role in purifying water, reducing flood risk, and storing carbon. Like other sites in urbanised areas, it lacks the full range of species that would once have helped maintain a balance of wildlife, such as a variety of large herbivores and carnivores. That's where the Thames Road Wetlands group comes in... Whilst a small group, led by volunteer site manager Chris Rose works at the site most weeks, we are now holding larger public volunteer sessions once a month on the 2nd Friday of everyone month with all tools, waders and kit provided. Winter activities include cutting and removing Reed from shallow areas to maintain open water for birds and dragonflies, sustain a greater variety of plant species and reduce drying out. Also pollarding Sallows (cutting back selected trees and chopping up and stacking the brash), silt removal, occasional path work and some litter picking duties. Besides supporting the site's wildlife, helping out is a rewarding way to connect with nature and benefit your local community. You will need work clothes, adequate sun/rain shower protection and any food and drink required. There are toilet facilities nearby at the council depot which also has a canteen. There are a some convenience stores about 10 mins away. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided. The events start at 10.30am, but please arrive at 10am to get kitted up and briefed at the meeting point, which is by the steps near Thames Road on By-way 105 (what3words location: dome.silly.above) near the bridge where the road crosses the River Cray. Discover your local wetland in Northbrook Park, Lewisham. Following the exciting wetlands and stream restoration at Northbrook Park delivered by Lewisham Council and Glendale, environmental charity Thames21 is hosting a series of volunteering sessions and free, family-friendly events by the wetlands. This project supports the local community’s vision for the Grove Park area, including the creation of the Railway Children Urban National Park, a unique green space celebrating nature, heritage, and community. Join us for a leisurely wintery guided walk following the Silk Stream trail. We will start the walk at Simmonds Mead and end at Montrose Playing Fields. We will follow the path of the Burnt Oak Brook through Lyndhurst Park, The Meads Open Space, Watling Park, Silk Stream Park and finally into Montrose Playing fields. There is a cafe in Montrose Playing Fields for refreshments if you would like to stay. The walk is mainly on pavements and footpaths with a short stretch on grass.

Lyndhurst Park

Are you concerned about the health of the Thames and other local streams and brooks? Do you have half an hour a month to spare? Do you want to be part of research and become a "citizen scientist"? If the answer to the above questions is yes, then we invite you to become one of our new Thames Water Watchers! Water watchers test for pollution in their local river or stream regularly, usually once a month. The data collected helps to protect rivers. All of the data will be shared with the local catchment partnership, the Environment Agency, Thames Water, local councils and the media, and used to highlight issues in our local rivers and push for improvements and change. For this training event, we are looking for volunteers who are interested in monitoring the Thames from Wallingford to Caversham. A map of the potential sample sites can be viewed here: <a href="https://tinyurl.com/ae2x7h5s" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://tinyurl.com/ae2x7h5s&nbsp;</a> The training event will cover:<ul><li>An introduction to river health and river pollution</li><li>Introduction to citizen science for rivers</li><li>How to take a freshwater watch sample for phopshates, nitrates, ammonia and monitor visual pollution (field demonstration)</li><li>Collecting and uploading data to the freshwater watch website</li><li>Selecting a sample site</li><li>Being a guardian and advocate for your local river: first steps</li></ul> This training event is run by Thames21 on behalf of the South Chilterns Catchment Partnership, and funded by Mend the Gap. The South Chilterns Catchment Partnership is a group of organisations and individuals who are working together for a healthy, thriving water environment for people and wildlife. Our vision is a network of healthy streams, rivers and other freshwater habitats, with flourishing nature and clean, plentiful water, particularly in our globally rare chalk streams. Join us for our Action for Silk Stream monthly volunteering days. They will be held on the last Thursday of each month. We will be at one of our project sites this month either in Barnet or Harrow. Activities include litter picking in the stream and surrounding space, vegetation removal and balsam removal. Where to meet:TBC - somewhere in the Silk stream catchment in Barnet or Harrow What to Bring:Dress for the weather and the task – long trousers and sleeves are advisable as there are nettles and brambles.Please bring a packed lunch and plenty of fluids.We will bring tea/coffee and biscuits.We will provide all other equipment (including wellies) needed for the event and we look forward to welcoming you! Join us to bring the Dollis Brook back to life! A total of 8 fun and interactive volunteer events will be held throughout the winter season to restore the Dollis Brook to its former glory. Activities include toeboard removal to reconnect the brook to its floodplain, deflector installation and invasive vegetation management.&nbsp; Where to meet:Longland Drive – What 3 Words: lift.fumes.cargo (about half way down - look for the Thames 21 van)Nearest tube – Totteridge &amp; Whetstone&nbsp; I have moved the location to Longland Drive as it is closer to our site and easier to transport the tools.
