We will be collecting the litter we find and categorising it into sewage derived litter, plastic items, and other litter. This will help us to determine the quantity of litter turning up along the river side and to investigate which litter category is the biggest problem. <h2>💻🌊 Join Oxford’s data-driven hackathon to tackle the future of our rivers.</h2><h3> </h3>Rivers are in crisis. Across the Thames basin, only 6% of rivers and streams are in good ecological condition. From sewage and agricultural runoff to droughts, floods, and microplastics, our waterways face a storm of complex challenges. But hidden in the flow of thousands of collected data points lies the potential to turn the tide. Hack the River invites coders, data scientists, designers, and environmental problem-solvers to unleash their creativity and technical skills on real-world river data. Over two weeks, teams will dive into the open-source <a href="oxfordrivers.ceh.ac.uk" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Oxford Rivers Portal</a>, select pressing “wicked questions,” and develop data-powered insights and solutions that can drive real change. You’ll form teams at the kick-off session on 13th November, collaborate intensively over 13 days, and pitch your findings to experts from across science, policy, and conservation at the closing session on 27th November. Winners will receive a cash prize and all participants may have their work showcased on the Oxford Rivers Portal — shaping the future of river health. Despite its urban surroundings, Thames Road Wetland which sits within the Green Belt, is part of a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation, making it one of the best sites for wildlife in London. It is home to national, London and Bexley rarities including stately MarshSow-thistles, tiny Brookweed, Water Voles and Harvest Mice along with a wide range of invertebrates and birds such as Water Rail, Cetti's and Reed Warblers. Wetlands like this are crucial for biodiversity and play an important role in purifying water, reducing flood risk, and storing carbon. Like other sites in urbanised areas, it lacks the full range of species that would once have helped maintain a balance of wildlife, such as a variety of large herbivores and carnivores. That's where the Thames Road Wetlands group comes in... Whilst a small group, led by volunteer site manager Chris Rose works at the site most weeks, we are now holding larger public volunteer sessions once a month on the 2nd Friday of everyone month with all tools, waders and kit provided. Winter activities include cutting and removing Reed from shallow areas to maintain open water for birds and dragonflies, sustain a greater variety of plant species and reduce drying out. Also pollarding Sallows (cutting back selected trees and chopping up and stacking the brash), silt removal, occasional path work and some litter picking duties. Besides supporting the site's wildlife, helping out is a rewarding way to connect with nature and benefit your local community. You will need work clothes, adequate sun/rain shower protection and any food and drink required. There are toilet facilities nearby at the council depot which also has a canteen. There are a some convenience stores about 10 mins away. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided. The events start at 10.30am, but please arrive at 10am to get kitted up and briefed at the meeting point, which is by the steps near Thames Road on By-way 105 (what3words location: dome.silly.above) near the bridge where the road crosses the River Cray. Wilbury Way Open Space Wetland was planted in 2023 with funding from Replenish, and is helping to reduce pollution entering the Pymmes Brook as well as prevent flooding. In order for this important space to function effectively, it requires maintenance. Thames21 and the Pymmes Brookers will undertake a number of tasks to improve the wetland: -Cutting and removing reeds to reduce drying out and promote biodiversity in cells 1 &amp; 3-Cutting back plants around inlets and outlets to enable effective monitoring and flow-Removing small willow trees-Identification of grass turfs for future translocation to cells 2 &amp; 4-Litter picking duties Thames21 will provide all tools, equipment, gloves, and some waders &amp; wellies, as well as tea break refreshments. Please bring work clothes you don't mind getting muddy, rain protection and any food and drink you require. The event starts at 10am and finishes at 1.30pm. Watling Park

Discover your local wetland in Northbrook Park, Lewisham. Following the exciting wetlands and stream restoration at Northbrook Park delivered by Lewisham Council and Glendale, environmental charity Thames21 is hosting a series of volunteering sessions and free, family-friendly events by the wetlands. This project supports the local community’s vision for the Grove Park area, including the creation of the Railway Children Urban National Park, a unique green space celebrating nature, heritage, and community. Thames21 free events:<ul><li>The practical volunteering days will focus on hands on habitat maintenance to help maintain the wetlands.</li><li>Family-friendly events will encourage people of all ages to spend time by the wetlands enjoying free activities provided by Thames21. These will take place on a Saturday and will be advertised on <a href="https://linktr.ee/Thames21_RavensbourneCatchment" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://linktr.ee/Thames21_RavensbourneCatchment</a>.</li></ul> Read on to book your space at our practical volunteering days: When: Taking place on the third Friday on the month, between 10am-3pm.Who: Hosted by Thames21. Sessions may be co hosted by Lewisham Council and Glendale teams.What: Every session is different and that’s what makes it exciting! From habitat maintenance and deepening ponds to litter picking and everything in between, you’ll get hands-on experience helping nature thrive. Whether you're clearing overgrown vegetation, digging to improve water flow, or simply tidying up the area, each visit brings new tasks and new ways to make a difference.Experience: No experience needed, just enthusiasm and a love for the outdoors.Age: These sessions are designed for 18 years and above. Come ready to get stuck in and make a real difference to this beautiful green &amp; blue space! There are no toilets in the park so please bear this in mind before you leave home. The nearest community toilets are at the Ringway Centre. We will do our best to make this event as accessible as possible. Join Charlie from the Thames 21 River Restoration team to discover what's been done to revive the Gores Brook and learn how you can be part of the journey. This session is all about coming together to celebrate and care for this beautiful local waterway. You'll learn about the restoration work carried out over the winter months, discover the positive impact it's had, and find out how you can continue to help protect and preserve the natural beauty of the brook for generations to come. We will finish off the event with a community litter pick and water quality testing! Whether you’ve got 10 minutes or an hour, we’d love to see you!
