This webinar wll instruct you how to use and make the most of the Oxford Rivers Portal to find accurate, up-to-date information on rivers in Oxfordshire. Action for Silk Stream - River Action Day

Are you concerned about the health of your local river, stream or brook? Do you have half an hour a month to spare? Do you want to be part of research and become a “citizen scientist”? If the answer to the above questions is yes, then we invite you to become one of our new Ock Water Watchers! Water watchers test for pollution in their local river or stream regularly, usually once a month. The data collected helps to protect rivers. All of the data will be shared with the Environment Agency, Thames Water, local councils and the media, used to highlight issues in our local rivers and push for improvements and change. For this training event, we are looking for citizen scientists who are interested in monitoring the lower Ock catchment (e.g. Marcham, Didcot, Harwell, Abingdon), and the main Thames from Oxford to Dorchester-on-Thames. The training event will cover:<ul><li>An introduction to river health and river pollution</li><li>Introduction to citizen science for rivers</li><li>How to take a freshwater watch sample (field demonstration)</li><li>Collecting and uploading data to the freshwater watch website</li><li>Selecting a sample site</li></ul> This training event is run by Thames21 and the Letcombe Brook Project on behalf of the Ock Catchment Partnership. Glassmill Pond Volunteering Event - Plant ID & RMI 

THAMES21 and Barking &amp; Dagenham Ranger Service conducted six events in 2024 to improve the Gores Brook through Gores Brook Park, tackling the growing threat of Himalayan Balsam, an invasive plant.Himalayan Balsam is damaging to our native ecology, both plants, insect, and animals are affected by it. The Brook also suffers from others issues like litter and little public interaction, partly because the invasive balsam is so thick it denies access to the river. We are pleased to announce that we are back with another series of community events to help address the common issues affecting the Gores Brook, and we would like your help. Can you volunteer on the Gores Brook?&nbsp; Our project is aimed to assist local volunteers, empowering them to learn the skills and knowledge required to become involved and maybe even form a local River Action Group for the Gores Brook. These events will focus primarily on the issues affect the Gores Brook Channel but will also incorporate the open spaces through which it travels. THAMES21 are back! Continuing the successful toe-boarding removal on the Dollis Brook.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We will be starting Phase 2 of the project on the 25th September 2024.We will be finishing the last section in Brook Farm Open Space, then we will be moving downstream through Whetstone Stray. Do you have time to volunteer? As before there are many tasks that we need help with on this project, the tasks will be working with staff to help remove the toe-boarding and to clear the waste created to a collection point, so a reasonable level of fitness is required for this event, and isn't suitable for under 16's. Volunteer tasks on the day will consist of:<ol><li>Thames21 staff will be removing the toe-boarding with manual “Hi-lift jacks” from the Dollis Brook, we need volunteers help to both learn the methodology and assist if comfortable to do so, with drilling, fixing lifting blocks, working the jacks, and moving the timbers once freed.</li><li>Take part in a unique activity to help re-wild the banks of the Dollis Brook and take part in environmental clean-up work.</li><li>Learn how and why Thames21 and other organisation are working to restore our Rivers and Waterways, and why we want your help.</li><li>Help stabilise banks that might possibly be at risk of erosion by planting native species or installing coir matting.</li><li>Help us survey for various species, non-native and any possible rarer native species.</li><li>Help remove any Himalayan balsam that is present before toe-boarding is removed, to help limit any spreading of invasive species.</li></ol> What you need to bring with you: sensible clothes for the weather (warm layers, and a rain jacket if cold, sunscreen if sunny do think about your comfort), please bring a water bottle, and a sandwich or something for lunch, alternatively there are shops on Totteridge Lane near the site. Join us for an important conservation effort in Thamesmead as we team up with Peabody and the Environment Agency to combat the invasive floating pennywort threatening our local canals. This fast-growing aquatic plant can quickly overtake water surfaces, harming water quality and local biodiversity. These events are a key part of our broader strategy to protect our waterways. This hands-on event offers a fantastic opportunity to make a tangible difference in our local environment. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your enthusiasm and a commitment to protecting our natural spaces. We’ll provide all the necessary equipment, including gloves, waders, and refreshments. If you plan to enter the canals, please enter your shoe size on the registration form so we can provide appropriately sized waders. Volunteers are encouraged to wear suitable outdoor clothing, and preferably water proof clothing or bring a spare pair of clothes as you might get wet. The day will start with a brief introduction to floating pennywort and its ecological impact, followed by a safety talk and removal techniques. We’ll then head to the water to remove as much pennywort as possible, with a lunch break at 12 PM. The matts of pennywort can be pulled apart and then thrown on to the banks to break down, similar to what the canals teams do but by hand instead of mechanically.&nbsp; Children are welcome to come, but adult supervision is required. By joining us, you’ll play a vital role in preserving Thamesmead’s waterways for wildlife and future generations. It's also a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and learn more about local conservation efforts. We will be meeting at 10am by the green on Fieldfare Rd. Volunteering some time for wetland habitat maintenance is a valuable way to help the environment and safeguard fragile ecosystems. Wetlands are crucial for biodiversity and play important roles in purifying water, controlling floods, and storing carbon.&nbsp;It's not only beneficial for theenvironment but also a rewarding way to connectwith nature and benefit your local community.Your efforts can help protect andpreserve these vital ecosystems for future generations.&nbsp;We have Thames21 staff-supported eventson alternate Fridays, if you would like to volunteer,please come down, we can kit you out with waders so that you can assist withmore Autumn Reed cutting in shallow water areas, designed to try and weakensome of the stands of this vigorous plant in order to maintain a greatervariety of vegetation types.&nbsp;There are other tasks too, such as pruning work to openpathways, pollarding sallows (trimming small trees), and some litter pickingduties. We will provide all theequipment needed.&nbsp;You will need work clothes, adequatesun/rain shower protection and any food and drink required. As it is wild landthere are no toilet facilities on site and the nearest are at shops in CrayfordTown Centre about 10-15 minutes away. Join us for a rewarding day of hands-on conservation work as we restore the River Beck! Your efforts will help improve the river’s health and habitat for local wildlife. This event is run in conjunction with the <a href="https://www.bromleyfriendsforum.org/bromley-countryside-volunteers.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(17, 17, 17);">Bromley Countryside Volunteers</a>, who bring their expertise and passion for conservation. On the day, you’ll be involved in various activities such as toe boarding removal, installing deflectors, and managing vegetation. It’s a great opportunity to get outdoors, meet like-minded people, and make a tangible difference. THAMES21 are back! Continuing the successful toe-boarding removal on the Dollis Brook.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We will be starting Phase 2 of the project on the 25th September 2024.We will be finishing the last section in Brook Farm Open Space, then we will be moving downstream through Whetstone Stray. Do you have time to volunteer? As before there are many tasks that we need help with on this project, the tasks will be working with staff to help remove the toe-boarding and to clear the waste created to a collection point, so a reasonable level of fitness is required for this event, and isn't suitable for under 16's. Volunteer tasks on the day will consist of:<ol><li>Thames21 staff will be removing the toe-boarding with manual “Hi-lift jacks” from the Dollis Brook, we need volunteers help to both learn the methodology and assist if comfortable to do so, with drilling, fixing lifting blocks, working the jacks, and moving the timbers once freed.</li><li>Take part in a unique activity to help re-wild the banks of the Dollis Brook and take part in environmental clean-up work. </li><li>Learn how and why Thames21 and other organisation are working to restore our Rivers and Waterways, and why we want your help.</li><li>Help stabilise banks that might possibly be at risk of erosion by planting native species or installing coir matting.</li><li>Help us survey for various species, non-native and any possible rarer native species.</li><li>Help remove any Himalayan balsam that is present before toe-boarding is removed, to help limit any spreading of invasive species.</li></ol> What you need to bring with you: sensible clothes for the weather (warm layers, and a rain jacket if cold, sunscreen if sunny do think about your comfort), please bring a water bottle, and a sandwich or something for lunch, alternatively there are shops on Totteridge Lane near the site. These raingardens are being built on grass verges on Brabazon road. Raingardens can hold large volumes of surface water which helps reduce flooding.
