Thames21 is an environmental charity that works with communities to build climate resilience through the restoration of rivers and wetlands.

Explore the world of citizen science and help protect your local waterways! Join us for a series of activities focused on monitoring water quality and identifying pollutants on Chestnuts Field from the comfort of the library. Always wanted to get involved with nature projects and scientific endevours but put off by bad weather and clambering outdoors? This is the perfect event for you! Learn all about the biology Chestnuts Field Wetland without any mobility stresses and weather scares. This is for beginners so no need for a science background! Refreshments will be provided! Learn the science of water testing, understand how to interpret pollutant levels, and discover how to contribute to healthier ecosystems in the newly constructed wetlands and the outputs that are flowing into the Dagenham Brook. All necessary water sampling equipment and testing kits will be provided. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for outdoor activity. Do you have time to volunteer at Glassmill Pond?The volunteering tasks over this phase of the project will be working with staff to help improve the current channel; reinforce the “bund” by planting the exposed sides of the channel with suitably strong rooting plug plants such as sedges, rushes, iris and other marginal aquatics.Bund repairs with clay to the constructed works and maintenance tasks across the site.Litter picking and vegetation management. We also plan to carry out plant (flora) and RMI (Riverfly Monitoring Initiative) Surveys to gauge the current bio-diversity of the site. Action for Silk Stream - River Action Day

Come along and join Thames21 as a river citizen scientist on the River Thames. We will be collecting the litter we find and categorising it into sewage derived litter, plastic items, and other litter. This will help us to determine the quantity of litter turning up along the river side and to investigate which litter category is the biggest problem. We look forward to welcoming you to our event which will cover everything you need to know to carry out a litter survey or clean up with Thames21 Citizen Science Volunteer for Thames River Watch. Both new and existing Thames21 volunteers are encouraged to attend and investigate plastic pollution on the Tidal Thames. Glassmill Pond Volunteering Event - Plant ID & RMI 

THAMES21 and Barking &amp; Dagenham Ranger Service conducted six events in 2024 to improve the Gores Brook through Gores Brook Park, tackling the growing threat of Himalayan Balsam, an invasive plant.Himalayan Balsam is damaging to our native ecology, both plants, insect, and animals are affected by it. The Brook also suffers from others issues like litter and little public interaction, partly because the invasive balsam is so thick it denies access to the river. We are pleased to announce that we are back with another series of community events to help address the common issues affecting the Gores Brook, and we would like your help. Can you volunteer on the Gores Brook?&nbsp; Our project is aimed to assist local volunteers, empowering them to learn the skills and knowledge required to become involved and maybe even form a local River Action Group for the Gores Brook. These events will focus primarily on the issues affect the Gores Brook Channel but will also incorporate the open spaces through which it travels. This is a planting event: we will be transplanting new plug plants at this event Sedges, Rushes, Iris, and Grasses along the marginal banks so come and help us transform the flora on the Gores Brook! Join us for a hands-on project at Spiceball Park this winter! We’ll be focusing on enhancing the River Cherwell, working to restore and improve the natural river processes. Volunteers will help manage vegetation, construct dead hedges, and get up close with the river by putting on waders to build in-channel deflectors and brash berms. These works will increase habitat diversity, reduce riverbank erosion, and limit the amount of sediment flowing downstream, benefiting the river and the animals and plants which live in it. What you need to bring:<ul><li>Please bring lunch and water, we will provide tea, coffee and biscuits</li><li>Please do bring layers, sensible footwear and waterproofs. It can get cold working outside and in the water and the weather can turn any time</li></ul> Please note:<ul><li>This event involves physical activity, including walking, wading, and using tools. THAMES21 are back! Continuing the successful toe-boarding removal on the Dollis Brook.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We will be starting Phase 2 of the project on the 25th September 2024.We will be finishing the last section in Brook Farm Open Space, then we will be moving downstream through Whetstone Stray. Do you have time to volunteer? As before there are many tasks that we need help with on this project, the tasks will be working with staff to help remove the toe-boarding and to clear the waste created to a collection point, so a reasonable level of fitness is required for this event, and isn't suitable for under 16's. Join us for an important conservation effort in Thamesmead as we team up with Peabody and the Environment Agency to combat the invasive floating pennywort threatening our local canals. This fast-growing aquatic plant can quickly overtake water surfaces, harming water quality and local biodiversity. These events are a key part of our broader strategy to protect our waterways. This hands-on event offers a fantastic opportunity to make a tangible difference in our local environment. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your enthusiasm and a commitment to protecting our natural spaces. We’ll provide all the necessary equipment, including gloves, waders, and refreshments. If you plan to enter the canals, please enter your shoe size on the registration form so we can provide appropriately sized waders. Volunteers are encouraged to wear suitable outdoor clothing, and preferably water proof clothing or bring a spare pair of clothes as you might get wet. The day will start with a brief introduction to floating pennywort and its ecological impact, followed by a safety talk and removal techniques. We’ll then head to the water to remove as much pennywort as possible, with a lunch break at 12 PM. The matts of pennywort can be pulled apart and then thrown on to the banks to break down, similar to what the canals teams do but by hand instead of mechanically.&nbsp; Children are welcome to come, but adult supervision is required. By joining us, you’ll play a vital role in preserving Thamesmead’s waterways for wildlife and future generations. It's also a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and learn more about local conservation efforts. We will be meeting at 10am by the green on Fieldfare Rd. Volunteering some time for wetland habitat maintenance is a valuable way to help the environment and safeguard fragile ecosystems. Wetlands are crucial for biodiversity and play important roles in purifying water, controlling floods, and storing carbon.&nbsp;It's not only beneficial for theenvironment but also a rewarding way to connectwith nature and benefit your local community.Your efforts can help protect andpreserve these vital ecosystems for future generations.&nbsp;We have Thames21 staff-supported eventson alternate Fridays, if you would like to volunteer,please come down, we can kit you out with waders so that you can assist withmore Autumn Reed cutting in shallow water areas, designed to try and weakensome of the stands of this vigorous plant in order to maintain a greatervariety of vegetation types.&nbsp;There are other tasks too, such as pruning work to openpathways, pollarding sallows (trimming small trees), and some litter pickingduties.
