If you want to help improve the health of the Thames and its tributaries, we'd love to work with you. Free accreditation: Thames21 is a nationally recognised&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncfe.org.uk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 56, 118);">NCFE Customised Qualification Centre.</a> This course spans two full days of in-person training, with an additional opportunity to attend a Thames21 event at a later date of your choice, allowing you to observe leadership in action. After accreditation, and gaining 'badged status', any community event that you run will be covered by Thames21’s public liability insurance, providing legal protection and peace of mind for yourself and any volunteers taking part. This course also provides a pathway to register as a Thames21 Event Support Contractor (ESC): a freelance role, assisting Thames21’s diverse and expanding work. ESC’s are paid above the London living wage and are vital to Thames21’s work. Liz Anderson is a licensed mudlark who has been searching and recording the Tidal Thames for many years. The river is liquid history, rolling back twice a day exposing a range of artefacts and archaeological features from London's rich and complex past. Thames21 is collaborating with the National Trust and its Urban Rangers to organise a day of craft activities for children which will involve sitting by the River Wandle and drawing it with paints, crayons and coloured pencils, as part of London Rivers Week 2025. This nature-inspired activity aims to get children to create a bespoke piece of art using wildlife identification kits and get enthused and inspired by the River Wandle and its surrounding ecosystem. All kids will receive a certificate. We are hoping to use the art pieces to make a banner we can display in the park after the event. All U18s must be accompanied by an adult. All are welcome.

THAMES21 and Barking &amp; Dagenham Ranger Service conducted six events in 2024 to improve the Gores Brook through Gores Brook Park, tackling the growing threat of Himalayan Balsam, an invasive plant.Himalayan Balsam is damaging to our native ecology, both plants, insect, and animals are affected by it. The Brook also suffers from others issues like litter and little public interaction, partly because the invasive balsam is so thick it denies access to the river. We are pleased to announce that we are back with another series of community events to help address the common issues affecting the Gores Brook, and we would like your help. Can you volunteer on the Gores Brook?&nbsp; Our project is aimed to assist local volunteers, empowering them to learn the skills and knowledge required to become involved and maybe even form a local River Action Group for the Gores Brook. These events will focus primarily on the issues affect the Gores Brook Channel but will also incorporate the open spaces through which it travels. This is a planting event: we will be transplanting new plug plants at this event Sedges, Rushes, Iris, and Grasses along the marginal banks so come and help us transform the flora on the Gores Brook! Volunteering activities will range from: <ol><li>Litter picking both in and out the river channel.</li><li>Managing vegetation to improve the range of habitats and open up areas for people to access the river banks.</li><li>Seeding native wildflowers along the banks.</li><li>Habitat creation (hibernaculum's, hard wood deflectors, bird/bat boxes installation).</li><li>Surveying and recording existing species.</li><li>Removing Himalayan Balsam</li></ol> What you need to bring with you: sensible clothes for the weather (warm layers, and a rain jacket if cold/wet, sunscreen/hat if sunny do think about your comfort), please bring a water bottle, and a sandwich or something for lunch, we do stop for a break at 12pm.We will provide all the require kit you need for the event, such as waders, tools, PPE, and refreshments (tea, coffee and biscuits to all volunteers).We will provide project information and a health and safety briefing to all volunteers on site.Meeting location will be&nbsp;the entrance to Gores Brook Park next to the brook on Hedgeman's Road you will see a Thames21 van and uniformed staff member. THAMES21 are back! Continuing the successful toe-boarding removal on the Dollis Brook.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We will be starting Phase 2 of the project on the 25th September 2024.We will be finishing the last section in Brook Farm Open Space, then we will be moving downstream through Whetstone Stray. Do you have time to volunteer? As before there are many tasks that we need help with on this project, the tasks will be working with staff to help remove the toe-boarding and to clear the waste created to a collection point, so a reasonable level of fitness is required for this event, and isn't suitable for under 16's. Volunteer tasks on the day will consist of:<ol><li>Thames21 staff will be removing the toe-boarding with manual “Hi-lift jacks” from the Dollis Brook, we need volunteers help to both learn the methodology and assist if comfortable to do so, with drilling, fixing lifting blocks, working the jacks, and moving the timbers once freed.</li><li>Take part in a unique activity to help re-wild the banks of the Dollis Brook and take part in environmental clean-up work.</li><li>Learn how and why Thames21 and other organisation are working to restore our Rivers and Waterways, and why we want your help.</li><li>Help stabilise banks that might possibly be at risk of erosion by planting native species or installing coir matting.</li><li>Help us survey for various species, non-native and any possible rarer native species.</li><li>Help remove any Himalayan balsam that is present before toe-boarding is removed, to help limit any spreading of invasive species.</li></ol> What you need to bring with you: sensible clothes for the weather (warm layers, and a rain jacket if cold, sunscreen if sunny do think about your comfort), please bring a water bottle, and a sandwich or something for lunch, alternatively there are shops on Totteridge Lane near the site. Are you concerned about pollution of the Thames/Isis and other rivers and streams in Oxford? Do you have some time to spare (30 mins per month)? Do you want to be part of research and become a “citizen scientist”? If the answer to the above questions is yes, then we invite you to become one of our new Oxford Water Watchers! Water watchers test for:1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Nutrient pollution (indicates how healthy the river ecosystem is), and2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Bacterial pollution (indicates how clean/dirty the water is for recreation, some sites only). The data they collect helps to protect rivers. All the data is shared with the Environment Agency, Thames Water, local councils and the media, used to highlight issues in our local rivers and push for improvements and change. For this training event, we are looking for citizen scientists who are interested in monitoring in the city of Oxford, particularly at sites with lots of river users (e.g. Tumbling Bay, Port Meadow, Longbridges), and the Boundary Brook. We enjoyed it so much last year that the Annual Osun River Ritual organisers and Thames21 are again inviting you to this special tribute to the river goddess Mama Osun. This event is part of the celebration for London Rivers Week. Osun is the river deity (Orisa) of sweet waters. She is the symbol of abundance, beauty, creativity, fertility, joy, love, sensuality and so much more. The Ifa tradition of the Yoruba, from which she stems, acknowledges her importance to the environment and human life. Without her, nothing can be produced, nothing grows or is reproduced, since she represents the force of nature that expresses creativity, nurture and divine love. The River Thames, into which flows the Wandle River where we usually celebrate Mama Osun, is constantly bombarded with toxic waste. Wet wipes, plastic bottles and several other hazardous items are thrown into the river every single day. This is a violation of the sacredness of water and therefore of Mama Osun. All indigenous communities have sacred symbols and rituals that promote harmony with our environment. It is our collective responsibility to embrace this harmony by celebrating and preserving our rivers. You are invited to celebrate Mama Osun as a symbol of our life and love for our environment. We will gather at Battersea Bridge Southside, do a brief clean up, followed by a communal and collective offering of the dainties she adores. This is a wonderful therapeutic and feel good experience - bring the family, children (big and small) would love it! In that time she has amassed a collection of unusual lost and discarded objects, including an Iron Age pot, Roman hair pins, a medieval pilgrim badge, Tudor shoes, 17th century children’s toys, scores of buttons, hundreds of clay pipes and even a glass eye. She began posting on social media in 2012 and her first book,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/mudlarking-9781408889237/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: var(--tec-color-link-primary);">Mudlarking: Lost and Found on the River Thames</a>&nbsp;was published by Bloomsbury in 2019. Lara has written on Mudlarking for the&nbsp;Guardian, the&nbsp;Telegraph, the&nbsp;Financial Times&nbsp;and&nbsp;Spectator magazine, she wrote a short mudlarking series for BBC Radio, she has appeared many times on national and international television and radio, and has even done a TED Talk. In 2019 she was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and in 2020 she became an Associate Brother of the Artworker’s Guild. Volunteering some time for wetland habitat maintenance is a valuable way to help the environment and safeguard fragile ecosystems. Wetlands are crucial for biodiversity and play important roles in purifying water, controlling floods, and storing carbon.&nbsp;It's not only beneficial for theenvironment but also a rewarding way to connectwith nature and benefit your local community.Your efforts can help protect andpreserve these vital ecosystems for future generations.&nbsp;We have Thames21 staff-supported eventson alternate Fridays, if you would like to volunteer,please come down, we can kit you out with waders so that you can assist withmore Autumn Reed cutting in shallow water areas, designed to try and weakensome of the stands of this vigorous plant in order to maintain a greatervariety of vegetation types.&nbsp;There are other tasks too, such as pruning work to openpathways, pollarding sallows (trimming small trees), and some litter pickingduties. We will provide all theequipment needed.&nbsp;You will need work clothes, adequatesun/rain shower protection and any food and drink required. As it is wild landthere are no toilet facilities on site and the nearest are at shops in CrayfordTown Centre about 10-15 minutes away. THAMES21 are back! Continuing the successful toe-boarding removal on the Dollis Brook.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We will be starting Phase 2 of the project on the 25th September 2024.We will be finishing the last section in Brook Farm Open Space, then we will be moving downstream through Whetstone Stray. Do you have time to volunteer? As before there are many tasks that we need help with on this project, the tasks will be working with staff to help remove the toe-boarding and to clear the waste created to a collection point, so a reasonable level of fitness is required for this event, and isn't suitable for under 16's. Volunteer tasks on the day will consist of:<ol><li>Thames21 staff will be removing the toe-boarding with manual “Hi-lift jacks” from the Dollis Brook, we need volunteers help to both learn the methodology and assist if comfortable to do so, with drilling, fixing lifting blocks, working the jacks, and moving the timbers once freed.</li><li>Take part in a unique activity to help re-wild the banks of the Dollis Brook and take part in environmental clean-up work. </li><li>Learn how and why Thames21 and other organisation are working to restore our Rivers and Waterways, and why we want your help.</li><li>Help stabilise banks that might possibly be at risk of erosion by planting native species or installing coir matting.</li><li>Help us survey for various species, non-native and any possible rarer native species.</li><li>Help remove any Himalayan balsam that is present before toe-boarding is removed, to help limit any spreading of invasive species.</li></ol> What you need to bring with you: sensible clothes for the weather (warm layers, and a rain jacket if cold, sunscreen if sunny do think about your comfort), please bring a water bottle, and a sandwich or something for lunch, alternatively there are shops on Totteridge Lane near the site. We will provide all the require kit you need for the event, such as waders, tools, PPE, and refreshments (tea, coffee and biscuits to all volunteers).Time: 10am – 2pm - We are meeting at 10am, this event will finish at 2pm.We will provide project information and a health and safety briefing to all volunteers on site.
