Despite its urban surroundings, Thames Road Wetland which sits within the Green Belt, is part of a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation, making it one of the best sites for wildlife in London. It is home to national, London and Bexley rarities including stately MarshSow-thistles, tiny Brookweed, Water Voles and Harvest Mice along with a wide range of invertebrates and birds such as Water Rail, Cetti's and Reed Warblers. Wetlands like this are crucial for biodiversity and play an important role in purifying water, reducing flood risk, and storing carbon. Like other sites in urbanised areas, it lacks the full range of species that would once have helped maintain a balance of wildlife, such as a variety of large herbivores and carnivores. That's where the Thames Road Wetlands group comes in... Whilst a small group, led by volunteer site manager Chris Rose works at the site most weeks, we are now holding larger public volunteer sessions once a month on the 2nd Friday of everyone month with all tools, waders and kit provided. Winter activities include cutting and removing Reed from shallow areas to maintain open water for birds and dragonflies, sustain a greater variety of plant species and reduce drying out. Also pollarding Sallows (cutting back selected trees and chopping up and stacking the brash), silt removal, occasional path work and some litter picking duties. Besides supporting the site's wildlife, helping out is a rewarding way to connect with nature and benefit your local community. You will need work clothes, adequate sun/rain shower protection and any food and drink required. There are toilet facilities nearby at the council depot which also has a canteen. There are a some convenience stores about 10 mins away. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided. The events start at 10.30am, but please arrive at 10am to get kitted up and briefed at the meeting point, which is by the steps near Thames Road on By-way 105 (what3words location: dome.silly.above) near the bridge where the road crosses the River Cray. Discover your local wetlands in Northbrook Park, Lewisham in 2026. Following the exciting transformation of Northbrook Park through new wetlands and stream restoration by Lewisham Council and Glendale in 2025, environmental charity Thames21 will continue into 2026 with a vibrant programme of volunteering sessions and free, family-friendly events taking place by the ponds, and sometimes indoor at The Ringway Centre. This project supports the local community’s vision for the Grove Park area, including the creation of the Railway Children Urban National Park, a unique green space celebrating nature, heritage, and community. The morning will be spent in the classroom, where participants will be introduced to the MoRPh survey method, river features, and the principles behind assessing river habitat quality. Later, we will take a short walk to a stretch of the Ching to carry out a practical MoRPh survey in the field. We will then return to the classroom to upload data. MoRPh (Modular River Physical) surveys are a method for recording the physical habitat characteristics of rivers, such as channel structure, vegetation, flow types, and bank features. These surveys help build a detailed picture of river condition, identify pressures or opportunities for improvement, and track changes over time. Training volunteers to carry out MoRPh surveys expands the evidence base for river restoration, supports community‑led stewardship, and strengthens local understanding of how healthy river systems function.

We will be collecting the litter we find and categorising it into sewage derived litter, plastic items, and other litter. Queenhithe

Volunteer with Thames21 to bring the newly excavated wetlands in Friary Park to life! This 4-cell wetland has been designed to store floodwaters and naturally treat water flowing in from Blackett’s Brook. The wetland vegetation plays a crucial role in removing excess nutrients and breaking down pollutants, while also creating a vibrant habitat for wildlife and enhancing the park’s natural beauty. We need your help to plant the final 1,000 plug plants in the wetland cells with easy-to-use tools. These plants will help purify the water, stabilise the banks and create a biodiverse landscape. No experience is needed – all training and guidance will be provided. It’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with nature and meet others in your community. Please note, this activity involves getting in the wetland cells and walking up and down the banks. Wellies and waders will be provided. Please wear weather appropriate clothing you don't mind getting muddy and bring food and water for yourself. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. We will meet by the wetland cells on the west side of the park at 9:30am. If you can't commit to the whole day, please do still come along to help out! We look forward to seeing you there.

More than just a landmark, the River Thames has been a water source for Londoners for two millennia; its tides have dictated the shape of the city and the reach of its trade. To walk its banks with a camera is to document the history of the capital. Join us for a free curated photo walk along the Thames, where documentary maker Gemma Duncan, together with mudlarks Jessica Forde and Lesley McDonnell, will walk you past historical ‘destinations’ and introduce basic photography composition to spark the creativity behind your next shot. Starting at the medieval entrance to Old London Bridge, we’ll cross the river and walk the Southbank, stopping at meeting points along the way. At each stop, you’ll hear about London’s medieval ‘living’ bridge, Roman London, the global trade of the 18th–19th centuries, Frost Fairs, and stories of the river that has shaped London so much. Between each meeting point, you’ll have free rein to snap away, capturing whatever might inspire you. You’ll be given a map before the walk, so you’ll know when and where to regroup at the next meeting point. Just as the River Thames has evolved, so has photography. We encourage all mediums, whether you shoot on 35mm film, a pinhole camera, a modern DSLR, or even a toy camera. After the event, you’ll have the opportunity to submit your favourite photo to the Thames21 team to be featured in a showcase of the river's history. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a photographer with an interest in history, come and capture this historic river through a new lens.&nbsp;What to bring:● Weather-Ready Gear: This is London! Join a community listening walk that traces the Thames riverside from Rotherhithe to Deptford as part of London Rivers Week 2026. Move your body, listen to your surroundings, and meet new people. A soundwalk is, as Hildegard Westerkamp described in 1974, “any excursion whose main purpose is listening to the environment.” More recently, writers such as Allie Martin and ameia camielle smith have reimagined soundwalking as a decolonial practice that we can use to reconnect with our environment. What to expect: As a group, we’ll walk at a gentle pace, tuning into the layers of sound that shape the Thames path, from the obvious to the overlooked. Soundwalking is an opportunity to slow down and share the experience of deep listening in community. afromerm will guide the group, offering prompts along the way, whether it’s listening for specific sounds, trying to listen in silence, or discussing observations with the group. As part of London Rivers Week 2026, join Thames blogger Patricia Stoughton for a leisurely, free guided walk along a step-free section of the Thames Path. The walk follows the Albert Embankment from Lambeth Bridge to Vauxhall Bridge and highlights some of the route’s most notable features, including the giant prow of a ship, the Art Deco Lambeth Fire Brigade HQ, a new island below the MI6 building, and the surprisingly little-known sculptures on Vauxhall Bridge. Distance: Less than a mile. Start time: 11am. Meet at the Riverside Cafe. Join us on a Beginners Botanical Walk as part of London Rivers Week. We will identify wildflowers and plants growing along the banks of the Burnt Oak Brook and the surrounding green spaces of Lyndhurst Park and The Meads Open Space. We’ll introduce the basics of botanical identification, noticing leaf shapes, flower structures and other key features that help us recognise common species. We’ll also shine a light on the overlooked: common “weeds” and urban plants that thrive in urban river environments, uncovering their ability to cope with environmental pressures.
