Come along and join Thames21 as a river citizen scientist on the River Thames. We will be collecting the litter we find and categorising it into sewage derived litter, plastic items, and other litter. This will help us to determine the quantity of litter turning up along the river side and to investigate which litter category is the biggest problem. We look forward to welcoming you to our event which will cover everything you need to know to carry out a litter survey or clean up with Thames21 Citizen Science Volunteer for Thames River Watch. Both new and existing Thames21 volunteers are encouraged to attend and investigate plastic pollution on the Tidal Thames. Despite its urban surroundings, Thames Road Wetland which sits within the Green Belt, is part of a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation, making it one of the best sites for wildlife in London. It is home to national, London and Bexley rarities including stately MarshSow-thistles, tiny Brookweed, Water Voles and Harvest Mice along with a wide range of invertebrates and birds such as Water Rail, Cetti's and Reed Warblers. Wetlands like this are crucial for biodiversity and play an important role in purifying water, reducing flood risk, and storing carbon. Like other sites in urbanised areas, it lacks the full range of species that would once have helped maintain a balance of wildlife, such as a variety of large herbivores and carnivores. That's where the Thames Road Wetlands group comes in... Whilst a small group, led by volunteer site manager Chris Rose works at the site most weeks, we are now holding larger public volunteer sessions once a month on the 2nd Friday of everyone month with all tools, waders and kit provided. Winter activities include cutting and removing Reed from shallow areas to maintain open water for birds and dragonflies, sustain a greater variety of plant species and reduce drying out. Also pollarding Sallows (cutting back selected trees and chopping up and stacking the brash), silt removal, occasional path work and some litter picking duties. Besides supporting the site's wildlife, helping out is a rewarding way to connect with nature and benefit your local community. You will need work clothes, adequate sun/rain shower protection and any food and drink required. There are toilet facilities nearby at the council depot which also has a canteen. There are a some convenience stores about 10 mins away. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided. The events start at 10.30am, but please arrive at 10am to get kitted up and briefed at the meeting point, which is by the steps near Thames Road on By-way 105 (what3words location: dome.silly.above) near the bridge where the road crosses the River Cray. The project aims to revive the River Beck through High Broom Woods. Activities include installing dead hedging to prevent sedimentation of the river and manage access, litter picking in the stream and surrounding space, installing deflectors in the channel to improve the health of the river and removing invasive vegetation. Following the exciting wetlands and stream restoration at Northbrook Park delivered by Lewisham Council and Glendale, environmental charity Thames21 is hosting a series of volunteering sessions and free, family-friendly events by the wetlands. This project supports the local community’s vision for the Grove Park area, including the creation of the Railway Children Urban National Park, a unique green space celebrating nature, heritage, and community. Join us for a leisurely wintery guided walk following the Silk Stream trail. We will start the walk at Simmonds Mead and end at Montrose Playing Fields. We will follow the path of the Burnt Oak Brook through Lyndhurst Park, The Meads Open Space, Watling Park, Silk Stream Park and finally into Montrose Playing fields. There is a cafe in Montrose Playing Fields for refreshments if you would like to stay. The walk is mainly on pavements and footpaths with a short stretch on grass.

Lyndhurst Park

Are you concerned about the health of the Thames and other local streams and brooks? Do you have half an hour a month to spare? Do you want to be part of research and become a "citizen scientist"? If the answer to the above questions is yes, then we invite you to become one of our new Thames Water Watchers! Water watchers test for pollution in their local river or stream regularly, usually once a month. The data collected helps to protect rivers. All of the data will be shared with the local catchment partnership, the Environment Agency, Thames Water, local councils and the media, and used to highlight issues in our local rivers and push for improvements and change. For this training event, we are looking for volunteers who are interested in monitoring the Thames from Wallingford to Caversham. Join us on the River Cray at Crayford! This is a volunteer session is to help us cut back the overgrown vegetation on the banks of the River Cray and use it to build a dead hedge. We will be cutting brambles and small saplings to build a dead hedge. A dead hedge is&nbsp;a barrier made from fallen branches, prunings and other woody debris, constructed by piling materials between two parallel rows of stakes.&nbsp;It serves as a wildlife habitat for insects, birds, and small mammals, while also acting as a natural fence or windbreak.&nbsp; Please note: A reasonable level of physical fitness is required for this event due to the nature of the tasks involved. The cutting will partly be on a steep bank so a level of dexterity and balance is required. There will also be tasks of moving the cut branches to a near by site to build the dead hedge.&nbsp; We will provide all tools, gloves, equipment and wellies. They will be held on the last Thursday of each month.&nbsp;We will be at one of our project sites this month either in Barnet or Harrow.&nbsp;Activities include litter picking in the stream and surrounding space, vegetation removal and balsam removal.&nbsp;Where to meet:TBC - somewhere in the Silk stream catchment in Barnet or Harrow&nbsp;What to Bring:Dress for the weather and the task – long trousers and sleeves are advisable as there are nettles and brambles.Please bring a packed lunch and plenty of fluids.We will bring tea/coffee and biscuits.We will provide all other equipment (including wellies) needed for the event and we look forward to welcoming you!&nbsp;Email helen.cardy@thames21.org.uk if you have any questions.Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This session is all about coming together to celebrate and care for this beautiful local waterway. You'll learn about the restoration work carried out over the winter months, discover the positive impact it's had, and find out how you can continue to help protect and preserve the natural beauty of the brook for generations to come.
