Harrow Farm

Since the farmer retired a couple of years ago, Harrow School’s beautiful farm has sat patiently waiting for a new use. We’re delighted that it’s now being transformed into a community farm for children, families and partner organisations across our local area to enjoy.   

We offer educational school visits and will be exploring many other activities such as nature-based play and community gardening. We’ll also be trialling more restorative farming and rewilding one of our large heritage fields to support richer biodiversity. 

We hope Harrow Farm will become a place for local people to experience nature, learn about sustainability, master new skills and connect to each other outdoors. 

What school year are the visiting children in?

We want the visit to meet your needs and complement the children's wider learning. Are there any specific topics (relating to nature, environment, science, geography) that you're currently covering in your classes that we could try to tie into the session?

How will you be travelling to the farm? 

Photography consent: Do you give consent for Harrow Farm staff to take photos of your group? Depending on the consent you give, photos may be used on the Harrow Farm/Harrow School website, in reports or in marketing materials to raise awareness about the farm. We can also share photos we take with you.

Bring learning outdoors - Visit our community farm!Harrow Farm is a place for children to explore, have fun together, get closer to nature and feel confident outdoors.Our primary school visits are carefully tailored to help children enjoy all the different sights, sounds, sensations and learning opportunities abundant on the farm.What adventures will your children have on the farm?Each visit includes two activities:<ul><li>Field activity: Flora and Fauna Scavenger Hunt - A flower, tree and minibeast identification activity exploring biodiversity</li></ul><ul><li>Hay Barn activity: Bug Hotel Making - A craft activity to build a bug habitat that children can take home.</li></ul>Visits include time for the children to have a picnic with their packed lunches. We also ensure time for 'just being' outdoors, helping children develop a sense of nature connection.Our Education Lead works closely with local schools to tailor visits to your group's individual needs. Please let us know if there are particularly learning themes you'd like us to try and relate the visit to.The practical bits<ul><li>Visits are 3 hours long and take place between 10am-1pm, Tuesday-Thursday.</li><li>Visits are for one class group of up to 30 children at a time.</li><li>You will need to bring a minimum of 1 supervising adult for every 6 children (so 5 adults for a class of 30), or more in line with standard age-related children to adult ratios.</li><li>You will need to bring snacks and packed lunches for the children and adults in your group. We have drinking water onsite.</li><li>We have handwashing facilities, two toilets and an accessible toilet.</li><li>Visits will go ahead in most weathers, unless it is especially inclement. We will discuss any adaptations or continency plans with you.</li><li>All visitors will need to wear comfortable, flat shoes with good grip. Trainers or wellies are preferred.</li><li>During the months April-September, children should be encouraged to wear factor 30+ SPF sun cream to prevent skin damage from sun exposure while outdoors.</li><li>Children should have waterproof and warm coats if the forecast requires.</li><li>In advance of the visit we will send you some pre-visit information about how to prepare, and a register of children and adult supervisors' names to complete so that it saves time on the day. We will send you a copy of our standard school visit risk assessment that covers the group's time on the farm - it is your responsibility to conduct your own risk assessment for the wider trip.</li><li>Our farm was a working farm for many decades - the ground is uneven in places and remnants of farm life remain around the site. We have carried out extensive repurposing works to ensure the farm is as safe as possible for visitors, and will give clear instructions about where the group can go and not go, but it is your responsibility to ensure your children follow instructions and stay in the permitted zones.</li></ul>Visits are free to primary schoolsVisits are fully subsidised by Harrow School and are free to primary schools.What we ask of youHarrow Farm is at the outset of its journey to becoming a learning, environmental and community hub for Harrow.
