Sustainable Wantage

Sustainable Wantage is a Community Action Group, part of a network of over 100 similar CAGs across Oxfordshire, focused on activities that protect and enhance our natural environment and strengthen our local community. We are run by volunteers interested in actions that have a positive impact and increase our resourcefulness and resilience as a community.

<h2>Clothes Clinic - Give your clothes a second life&nbsp;</h2> Have your favourite trousers developed a hole you cannot ignore? Have you fallen out of love with a T-shirt that once felt like you? Could a small change help you see them differently again? Join Sustainable Wantage from 10-3pm on 6 June at The Beacon, Wantage. Upstairs, visitors will explore a vibrant marketplace of preloved clothing stallholders delivered in partnership with Preloved Clothes Oxfordshire. Downstairs, Sustainable Wantage will host hands-on stations where people can repair, customise and rework clothes they already own. Visitors will be able to explore simple repairs, thoughtful alterations and hands-on decoration, with guidance from makers and artists. This event will share approachable ways to refresh well-worn pieces and to show how small interventions can make a real difference. No need to book - just drop in! This is a free space for everyone, full of inspiration, entertainment, friendly faces, and any advice you might need for making your clothes last longer.&nbsp;

<h2 class="ql-align-center">Don’t chuck it - Fix it!</h2> We have volunteer fixers ready to help you repair all kinds of household and electrical items;&nbsp;from toasters and toys, to hairdryers and hoovers.&nbsp;For sewing repairs or tool sharpening please contact wantagemix@gmail.com. We offer to look at your item for free. If you are able to leave a donation, this supports the time our volunteers generously give, and allows us to run more free events. We are happy to help investigate most items, please only book in items that are easily transportable by 1 person. Please note: we cannot look at microwaves. Booking is required, please select a time slot. Maximum of 2 items per person on each Repair Cafe date, please book separate slots for each item. Please be aware we are volunteers, not repair professionals. The repairers and organisers of the Repair Cafe are not liable for any loss that may result from advice and instructions concerning repairs or resulting from work performed in the Repair Café.

Sew your own stylish skirt!&nbsp; Join our fun and relaxed sewing workshop where you’ll create your very own&nbsp;Adjustable Waist Skirt with Pockets. When: 3 sessions (x 2.5 hours, total 7.5 hours), 6pm - 8:30pm, Fri 12 June, Fri 19 June, Fri 26 June &nbsp;What you’ll learn:• How to draft your own skirt pattern• Cutting and assembling your skirt• Sewing waistband, pockets and drawstrings• Professional finishing techniques for a polished look• Upcycling ideas Who this workshop is for:This workshop is ideal for those who are already confident in using a sewing machine and have some basic experience (for example, making cushions and simple home projects). What to bring:· Large paper for drafting pattern (wrapping paper, newspaper etc)· Your sewing machine + power cable (contact us if you need to borrow one)· Lightweight Cotton Fabric and matching thread (2-3 meters)· Basic sewing kit (measuring tape, scissors, markers etc) Spaces are limited—book your place today! <h2>Come and visit us at Grove and Wantage Extravaganza!</h2> We're teaming up with Wantage and Grove Active Travel and Dr Bike - bring along your bike for a free health check by Colin from <a href="https://www.facebook.com/slimecycleworks" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Slime Cycleworks</a>. We'll have nature activities with our Wild Wantage project alongside Letcombe Brook project - name that moth, how to attract wildlife to your garden, pebble painting and a river game. Pedal up a bubble storm on our static bike, and test your energy estimation skills. No need to book, just stroll over on the day!

<h2 class="ql-align-center">Don’t ditch it - Stitch it!</h2> The Stitch Clinic is once-a-month bookable session, similar to the ever so popular Repair Café... but for textiles. Our volunteer stitchers will help you give your well-loved items a longer life. Missing buttons, torn seams, tired teddies, pesky holes, worn areas - they can help with small repairs and simple alterations. Love your mend? The team provide their time and skills for free, but if you can, please help us back with a small donation—every penny goes toward supplies, electricity and tea to keep them going! Booking is required, please select a time slot and fill out a short form.Maximum of 2 items per person / per session (please book separate slots for each item). We focus on minor repairs and alterations, and can't take complex things such as bridal items. Zippers can be tricky; if you'd like to bring an item with a zip issue please send us a picture to wantagemix@gmail.com While we’ll do our very best, all repairs are undertaken at the owner’s risk. Please ensure items are washed and clean before bringing them in.

Please meet at the turning onto the Ridgeway (going East) from A338 (<a href="https://gridreferencefinder.com/#gr=SU4182884126|SU_s_41828_s_84126|1" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(17, 17, 17);">grid ref SU 41828 84126</a>), cars can be left here during the walk. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather, including bringing water, sunscreen and a hat if needed. If we need to cancel due to weather conditions we'll be in touch no later than 10am on the day.

Join us for a Summer Solstice Walk along the Ridgeway, spotting birds, butterflies and chalkland flora as we go. We'll come back via Pewit Woodland where we'll stop for a cuppa and see what birds we can identify using the woodland habitat. Start and end point: Ridgeway Car park on A338 (what3words: ///cutback.raced.windmill, grid ref: SU 39463 84315). The route is easy, with some uneven ground &amp; takes about two and a half hours, extra time included for cup of tea at Pewit Woodland.

Keep gardening in the Summer! Bring your garden tools, knives, secateurs, and other hand tools to our sharpening session, run by qualified volunteers.We’ll be sharpening tools on the day to help you start the season safely and efficiently. The service is free, but donations are warmly welcomed to support Sustainable Wantage and future events like this.
