Sustainable Wantage

Sustainable Wantage is a Community Action Group, part of a network of over 100 similar CAGs across Oxfordshire, focused on activities that protect and enhance our natural environment and strengthen our local community. We are run by volunteers interested in actions that have a positive impact and increase our resourcefulness and resilience as a community.

Thank you for booking a place at our tech rescue workshop, we look forward to seeing you in The Mix on Wed 3rd Sept, 7pm. On the night you'll be able to ask questions and have a go on our examples of Windows 11, Chrome OS or Linux computers. If you’d like to bring along your laptop, you’d be very welcome. If you’re hoping to bring a desktop&nbsp;computer to look at (and don’t mind lugging it from nearby parking!), please let us know in advance and we’ll see if we can provide the necessary screen etc to help out.

If you have a Windows 10 computer, you’ve probably seen the pop-ups explaining that it’s “ending support” in October. This will mean no more security updates and over the coming years, software and websites will gradually stop supporting your computer. If your PC isn’t new enough to upgrade to Windows 11, there are some great options to keep it running: often if you wipe the computer and start again, Windows 11 will install fine on many computers which don't upgrade. For older systems, Google’s Chrome OS or Linux are free, capable options which will often make your computer run faster too. Our workshop, teaming up with SHARE Oxford’s Tech Rescue, is here to help if you need a hand upgrading to Windows 11 or would like to learn about alternatives and what they mean for the software you use. We’ll have examples of the different systems to have a go with and you’re welcome to bring your own devices with you to talk through. We run a monthly Repair Café in Wantage and are looking for volunteer fixers to help diagnose and repair all kinds of household and electrical items. We're seeking volunteers with experience of fixing small electricals; enthusiasm for investigating and problem solving; and a desire to help bring things back to life - reducing waste and saving people money. Wondering if this might be for you? Jo (Repair Cafe organiser) and Justin (Repair Cafe volunteer) will explain how the Repair Cafe works in The Mix, the items we see and the kinds of issues we tend to find, with lots of opportunities for you to ask questions. If you enjoy fixing things, do pop along and see if this is something you'd like to be part of!

Please drop off your apples between 10-10.30am and collect them between 4-5pm. <h2 class="ql-align-center">Bookings only, max 3 buckets of apples per person.</h2>£2 a bottle (if your apples make more juice than you need you can choose how manyto take home). We are happy to help investigate most items, please only book in items that are easily transportable by 1 person. Please note: we cannot look at microwaves. Booking is required, please select a time slot. Maximum of 2 items per person on each Repair Cafe date, please book separate slots for each item. We offer to look at your item for free, if you are able to make a donation to help us keep running the Repair Cafe that is appreciated. Please be aware we are volunteers, not repair professionals. The repairers and organisers of the Repair Cafe are not liable for any loss that may result from advice and instructions concerning repairs or resulting from work performed in the Repair Café.
