Enfield Council Nature Recovery

Enfield Council is investigating opportunities to improve biodiversity by creating new and expanded habitats for wildlife, and broaden access to our blue and green spaces.

The work at Enfield Chase is London’s largest woodland and nature restoration initiative. The aim is to convert up to 1,000 hectares of farmland into a publicly accessible nature space which links to our existing parks and open spaces. It will result in the creation of hundreds of hectares of new woodland, with ponds and wetlands that will be easily accessed through a network of footpaths and cycleways.

This will be one of the largest nature restoration projects close to a large city anywhere in the UK. It will deliver sustainable benefits locally, regionally and nationally.

Achievements so far

80 hectares of new accessible woodland – 142,000 trees planted, plus areas set aside for natural regeneration
Making space for water – 50 ponds and wetland scrapes provide valuable habitat and stormwater reduction
Access and usability – 3.5km of London Loop footpath upgraded
Community engagement – over 2,000 volunteers, plus hundreds of school children have taken part in planting events

Enfield Council &amp; the Friends of Enfield Chase invite you to come and join in for the continuation of the Landscape Recovery project at Enfield Chase. Come along and help London breathe for the future, take an active part in the restoration of our landscape, meet like minded people, experience the beautiful outdoors, see some rarer wildlife and speak with knowledgeable staff who can provide insight into the project and how you can get involved.&nbsp; What are we doing?The London Wildlife Trust have developed a “Woodland Condition Self-assessment" tool (WCS) for volunteer groups.&nbsp;We will be using the WCS to provide a assessment of the conditions for various aspects of the woodlands at Ferny Hill, Turkey brook wood and Brooke Wood, offering an indication of the improvements that could be made. We are particular interested the impact of deer on the existing woodlands and how these will impact the new woodlands at Enfield Chase. We will walk as a group from Rectory Farm to Turkey brook wood, then to Brooke Wood (3.8km round walk), have a lunch break and then we will walk to Ferny hill wood. From Brooke wood there is a option to head back to Rectory farm. Good opportunity to see all the nature recovery work the friends of Enfield Chase complete across the Chase What do I need to bring?Please bring water and something to eat for lunch. There is a toilet at Botany Bay Farm. Please also dress suitably for the weather and bring good walking shoes!&nbsp; An induction briefing and a health and safety talk will be given at the start of every event. We often discover wildlife and have fun as a group discovering different species of trees. What do I need to bring? We will provide teas, coffees and biscuits to all our volunteers.
