Thames21 are facilitating a Citizen Science MoRPh training day, combining classroom learning with hands‑on field experience. The morning will be spent in the classroom, where participants will be introduced to the MoRPh survey method, river features, and the principles behind assessing river habitat quality. Later, we will take a short walk to a stretch of the Ching to carry out a practical MoRPh survey in the field. We will then return to the classroom to upload data.
MoRPh (Modular River Physical) surveys are a method for recording the physical habitat characteristics of rivers, such as channel structure, vegetation, flow types, and bank features. These surveys help build a detailed picture of river condition, identify pressures or opportunities for improvement, and track changes over time. Training volunteers to carry out MoRPh surveys expands the evidence base for river restoration, supports community‑led stewardship, and strengthens local understanding of how healthy river systems function.
