Part of the BCVS programme
ABLs Walk Leader training is designed to support individuals to confidently lead safe, inclusive and enjoyable community walks.
The training includes an interactive face to face session covering:
• An overview of the Your Health Notts walking offer and where walk leaders fit within the pathway
• Roles and responsibilities of a walk leader
• Basic health and safety including risk assessment and safe route planning
• Managing groups safely including pace, inclusivity and supporting people with varying needs
• What to do in the event of an incident and escalation processes
• Safeguarding awareness and appropriate boundaries
• Promoting walks locally and encouraging engagement
• Signposting and onward support where appropriate
Alongside this, there is a short e learning element which participants will be signposted to following the session. This supports key learning themes such as safety, safeguarding and good practice and helps reinforce the face to face training.
Once completed, learners will be accredited as a Walk Leader. Walks delivered will sit under the individual’s own workstream, however leaders are trained through a partnership approach between Ramblers and Your Health Notts.
Each walk leader will also be assigned a mentor walker from the Your Health Notts team. This provides ongoing support, guidance and a named point of contact should any support be needed.
