Description

Category 1 Walk – Easy. A selection of trail and path that involves some ascent and descent. Total distance is 11.6km (7.2miles). Total elevation gain is 319m.

Set off is 10am.

Setting off from Herrington Country Park Car Park, this circular route around the park, Penshaw and Mount Pleasant Lake is a mix of water, wide open green spaces and wonderful views of Penshaw Monument from the ground, and from Penshaw Monument when we walk up to it.

In the park, where we start the walk there are lakes and wetlands which are thriving with wildlife, and the paths within it are wide, firm and easy to walk on.

We then leave the park, crossing the main road to climb the steps to Penshaw Monument. From there, we descent, heading north-east to follow the banks of the River Wear in a westerly direction to Mount Pleasant Lake, where we will stop for lunch. From there, we start the return leg back to the car park.

Before heading home, we will pop to Penshaw Farm Shop for coffee and cake - and maybe take some treats home from the on-site butchers, bakers and greengrocers.

Cost of Event:

The wellbeing walk is offered as a free event, as the ability to pay should not be a barrier to access nature in support of your health and wellbeing.

However, if you feel you are able to make a contribution to cover the costs of these walks, we would be very grateful for the offer of a donation - either in cash on the day or via bank transfer.

This will help not only cover the costs for the day but also scale up the number of walks we are able to offer.

For those able to pay, a donation of between £5-£10 per person would be great.

This can be paid in cash on the day, or via online transfer. Bank details for online transfer are:
