Description

Join us at Glassmill Pond for our joint volunteering sessions with the Friends of Bromley Town & Parks, to further enhance the recently re-landscaped site.

In 2023 construction began to create a river channel separate from the pond at Glassmill, this was to create a way of filtering the “run off” that enters the pond from the higher catchment area before it enter the Ravensbourne River.

Do you have time to volunteer at Glassmill Pond?

The volunteering tasks over this phase of the project will be working with staff to help improve the current channel; reinforce the “bund” by planting the exposed sides of the channel with suitably strong rooting plug plants such as sedges, rushes, iris and other marginal aquatics.

Bund repairs with clay to the constructed works and maintenance tasks across the site.

Litter picking and vegetation management. We also plan to carry out plant and RMI Surveys to gauge the current bio-diversity of the site.

Volunteer tasks on this day will consist of:

  1. This event will be focusing on surveying the plant species on site, this won't be an official registered survey as such, but a local ground search and record using staff knowledge, volunteers knowledge, and plant ID apps.
  2. We will conducting an RMI survey in the newly created channel to get a base line for species present, this will inform future records.
  3. Will we also be hoping to plant some ferns under the willow trees on site where the ground is bare.
  4. Litter picking the site while the vegetation is low.

What you need to bring with you: sensible clothes for the weather (warm layers, and a rain jacket if cold, sunscreen if sunny do think about your comfort), please bring a water bottle, and a sandwich or something for lunch, alternatively there are shops near the site.
