Voice to Influence: Understanding Epistemic Injustice in Youth Participation

Join us for our next in‑person National Lundy Conference, bringing together children’s workforce professionals to explore one of the most pressing challenges in youth participation: epistemic injustice.

Epistemic injustice occurs when a person’s knowledge, experience, or perspective is not taken seriously. For children and young people, this can mean being invited to speak but not recognised as credible contributors to decisions that shape their lives. This year’s conference will examine how these injustices show up in practice, and what meaningful, rights‑based participation requires from us as practitioners.

Grounded in the Lundy Model of Participation, the conference will move beyond theory to explore practical approaches that ensure young people’s:

• Space is intentionally and ethically created.

• Voices are supported through facilitation that strengthens confidence and credibility.

• Views are meaningfully listened to.

• Influence leads to real change rather than tokenistic involvement.

Recognising and addressing epistemic injustice is essential to realising children’s rights. Participation cannot be meaningful if young people are given opportunities to speak but are not recognised as credible contributors whose knowledge and lived experiences can influence outcomes.
