Description

Digital Inclusion Training

Led by Alex Reid, This training session will introduce voluntary sector organisations to the fundamentals of digital accessibility and inclusive online design.

This session will focus on realistic improvements that small organisations can implement without needing specialist technical expertise. The session combines short presentations with practical exercises, including reviewing example webpages, conducting a mini accessibility audit, and developing a simple action plan.

Full agenda:

1. Welcome and Introduction

Setting the scene around digital inclusion, why accessibility matters, and common barriers people face online.

2. Accessibility Basics

Overview of different accessibility needs (screen readers, low vision, cognitive load, etc.) and simple design considerations such as font choices, navigation and plain English.

Exercise: Webpage review

3. Making Websites Easier to Use

Practical guidance on inclusive layouts, headings, navigation and mobile accessibility — focused on what to look for rather than technical builds.

Exercise: Guided “mini audit”

4. Accessible Content Creation

Plain English writing, alt text, accessible PDFs and social media considerations, with before/after examples.

5. Practical Tools for Small Charities

Free tools and simple checks organisations can use without needing specialist skills.

6. Accessibility Action Planning
