These interactive half day courses are designed to empower your entire organisation to build a robust culture of safeguarding for children and young people and adults at risk.

Participants will leave with a practical, tailored safeguarding declaration that clarifies your organisation's unique role and equips you to communicate your safeguarding commitment powerfully to funders, stakeholders, and the community.

Safeguarding Children: Creating a Culture of Safety

Tuesday 10 March, 09.45-1.00pm

Moving beyond the basics of child protection, this session frames safeguarding as a proactive, preventative "gate" that prevents neglect and abuse. Participants will explore the legacy of the Children Act and understand the critical importance of "contextual safeguarding"- the idea that a child's safety is influenced by their peers, school, and local environment. With a special focus on the often-missed area of neglect and the emerging challenge of adultification, this course provides a safe space to examine organisational responsibilities.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define safeguarding for children as a preventative measure and "everyone's responsibility," differentiating it from the narrower concept of child protection.
  • Understand the historical context of the Children Act and its focus on creating a multi-layered safety net.
  • Explain the principles of "contextual safeguarding" and how a child's environment outside the home impacts their safety.
  • Recognise the reality of unconscious bias, including "adultification," and its potential to create inequitable safeguarding responses for children from minoritized communities.

Adult Safeguarding: From Board to Frontline

Tuesday 17th March, 12.00pm-3.30pm

Course Overview:

This interactive 3-hour course redefines adult safeguarding, moving beyond a simple "paper-based exercise" to a dynamic, organisation-wide commitment. Designed for everyone from board members to frontline staff and volunteers, this session explores the full spectrum of adult safeguarding, with a special focus on often-overlooked areas like self-neglect, hoarding, and financial abuse. Participants will explore the principles of the 2014 Care Act and learn to view safeguarding not just as protection, but as a fundamental part of their organisation's identity and service delivery. The course uniquely bridges the gap between policy and practice.

A unique feature of this session is a "Bring and Share" lunch, offering an informal, collaborative space for attendees to connect, share experiences, and discuss the real-world safeguarding challenges they face in their own organisations. By the end of the session, you will have a clear "safeguarding footprint" for your organisation and a practical action plan to ensure safeguarding is a living part of your culture.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define adult safeguarding in its broadest sense, including the concepts of self-neglect, neglect by others, and the preventative nature of safeguarding.
  • Identify the key areas of abuse for adults (with a focus on neglect, financial abuse, and psychological implications like hoarding) and the factors that increase risk.
  • Understand the responsibilities of all staff, volunteers, and board members under the 2014 Care Act.
  • Recognise the critical role of social connection (e.g., lunch clubs, community engagement) in preventing isolation and self-neglect.
  • Analyse the impact of unconscious bias and inequality in safeguarding responses, particularly concerning minoritized and global majority communities and sensitive issues like reporting to police.

Target Audience:

Trustees/Board Members, Senior Management, Frontline Staff, and Volunteers from VCS organisations working with adults.
