JAPANESE AINU PURSES


What is the course about?

Be inspired by the beautiful geometric embroidery found in

kimonos and textile items of the Ainu People.

The Ainu people create wonderful designs using fabric and thread, each community has its own unique pattern which is made up of three popular shapes, these come together to make visually striking designs.


What will I achieve on this course?


During this course you will learn how to draw, applique and stitch a design onto a panel of fabric.This panel may be displayed as a wall piece or be constructed into a small drawstring bag to keep special items or sewing accessories. By the end of the course you will:


  • Draw geometric designs inspired by the traditional shapesfound in the Ainu textiles.
  • Learn and demonstrate textile techniques including embroidery(couching and chain stitch) and applique.
  • Learn about the culture and history of Ainu textiles.
  • Know how to develop textile designs and patterns.
  • Use colour in a creative way.
