Find out the answers to these questions – and much more – on this 90-minute guided tour, uncovering stories from the LGBTQIA+ community throughout the history of Oxford. Led by city guide Hannah Field, you will meet a host of fascinating characters including a “lesbian, Indian princess, suffragette, refugee smuggler”, a flamboyant bus conductor, a Catholic Saint, and many more. Learn about local characters, pubs and clubs of Oxford, University societies, Oxford Pride and future events. This talk offers stories from the history of the city and its people (real and imagined), and celebrates the many forms of wordplay to relish on its streets and walls. Meet famous writers including saga master JR Tolkien and fellow writer and friend CS Lewis, of Narnia fame. Learn about compelling fictional characters who have left real traces on our city, from John le Carré’s master spy George Smiley to Philip Pullman’s brave heroine Lyra Silvertongue. This 90-minute walk led by local historian Liz Woolley will take you on a tantalising tour of the quirky world of food and drink in 19th century Oxford. From the ‘Celebrated Oxford Sausage’ to Frank Cooper’s famous ‘Oxford Marmalade’, Liz will expertly guide you through locations associated with Oxford’s unique food and drink heritage. Find out how Oxford’s eponymous delicacies went hand-in-hand with the city’s growing importance as a desirable tourist destination as you visit sites including Morrell’s Lion Brewery, the 250-year old Covered Market and some iconic pubs. You’ll also discover the city’s long history of malting and brewing, and how this important trade contributed to Oxford’s burgeoning industrial economy. Stories of Oxford tours: The Oxford Story

Oxford University is well known as a bastion of tradition and training ground for future Prime Ministers, but how much do you know about the city's radical past and present? On this two-hour circular walking tour, you will hear about epic 'town vs gown' riots, fiercely independent medieval women, determined but doomed Levellers, acid-sprinkling Suffragettes and the locals who kicked fascists out of the city for good. From Oscar Wilde, through Oxfam, to Rhodes Must Fall, this tour tells the fascinating and inspiring stories of those who have pushed back against power, privilege, colonialism and discrimination throughout Oxford's thousand-year history.This tour aims to tell the forgotten stories of Oxford's radicals, and to spark respectful debate and discussion. This insightful 90-minute walk will bring the artistic spirit of mid-19th century Oxford to life, taking you to the key locations in Oxford associated with the movement and its artists, and with particular reference to Oxford-inspired paintings. Shakespeare came to Oxford when travelling between work (London) and his family (Stratford-upon-Avon) - what a commute! What was Oxford like during his lifetime? What did he get up to while he was in town? This is an opportunity to pause and look carefully at Oxford city centre, noticing Elizabethan and Jacobean details you might pass by every day. The tour includes a unique Tudor bedroom above Cornmarket Street, the famous Painted Room which will be opened specially by Oxford Preservation Trust, just for us! The UK General Strike of May 1926 had a profound impact on the entire country. For nine days nearly three million trade unionists went on strike in sympathy with nearly a million miners, whose employers had locked them out because they would not accept steep pay cuts and a longer working day. Britain had never seen this level of mass action before, and the ripples of discontent would stretch out to Oxford: a town which in the 1920s and 30s was experiencing tumultuous industrial, cultural and social change. Find out how Oxford’s eponymous delicacies went hand-in-hand with the city’s growing importance as a desirable tourist destination as you visit sites including Morrell’s Lion Brewery, the 250-year old Covered Market and some iconic pubs. You’ll also discover the city’s long history of malting and brewing, and how this important trade contributed to Oxford’s burgeoning industrial economy. Find out how the significant families which controlled these businesses influenced Oxford’s developing economic, social and political life. Don’t miss our springtime Fam Jam! Dance, activities, making and sensory play for you and your little ones in a fun disco party atmosphere. Step into a world of colour, sparkle, and creativity in this hands-on art workshop where young artists transform simple materials into stunning mandala masterpieces! In this engaging session, participants will explore the beautiful folk technique of Lippan (mud mirror art) while designing their own eye-catching mandalas. Using soft clay, shimmering mirrors, and vibrant “magic colours,” children will learn how traditional patterns come alive through symmetry, texture, and shine. Once a thriving residential area for a working-class community in the heart of Oxford, the so-called ‘slums’ of St Ebbe’s were designated for demolition after the Second World War. Today, it is hard to imagine that these buildings and this community ever existed. This 90-minute circular walking tour will bring the lost buildings, streets and people of St Ebbe’s to life. On the walk, you will discover the fragments that still remain of a district which once housed thousands, along with the stories of the people who lived, loved, drank, ate worked and shopped there. Guided by Maurice East, local Oxford resident and historian, you will see the lost streets, alleyways, yards and homes come alive amidst the present-day monoliths of the Westgate shopping centre and Speedwell House. Join a tour of the Lost Streets of St Ebbe’s to discover why this community grew, how it thrived, and why it was so brutally destroyed. This is the story of Einstein’s visits to Oxford in the 1930s, his reception and significance. On this 90-minute circular walking tour of the beautiful Christ Church Meadow, you will encounter the real people, places and events behind the creation of the much-loved stories Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking-Glass. The tour this year is especially pertinent in marking 150 years since the publication of Lewis Carroll's epic nonsense poem, The Hunting of the Snark. The route will follow waterside paths in Oxford that were familiar to the 'real' Alice in Wonderland (Alice Liddell), daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, and to author Lewis Carroll, who was a lifelong resident of the college. Mark Davies, Oxford local historian, author and trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society, will reveal the history behind the novels as your expert tour guide. Stopping at significant locations along the riverside, you will learn about the all-important role of the River Thames in the creation of the Alice books. With reference to striking historical and geographic landmarks and features, as well as other classics of fantasy literature, the people, places and events which inspired the books will be revealed to you. Join a Real Alice in Wonderland Tour to see fiction, fantasy and history come to life through the eyes of a local expert in Oxford's history. Museum of Oxford Walks: The Real Alice in Wonderland

Explore an Oxford suburb of extraordinary diversity – artistic, literary, religious and architectural – with local historian, former Jericho canalboat resident and Chair of the Jericho Living Heritage Trust, Mark Davies. This 90-minute tour will reveal the transformation over 200 years of the open fields known as ‘Twentiacre’ and Great &amp; Little Bear Meadows into the compact streets of today. Bordered by the Oxford University Press and the ironworks known as Lucy’s, plus the Oxford Canal, Jericho is a neighbourhood like no other. Jericho has been the inspiration authors such as: Thomas Hardy, Sir John Betjeman, Colin Dexter (creator of ‘Inspector Morse’), and Sir Philip Pullman; it has nurtured the fledging Pre-Raphaelite art movement; it has provided a musical stepping stone for, most notably, Radiohead; and it has accommodated a rich mix of artisanal trades and services. Museum of Oxford Walks: Jericho: 200 years of a ‘dangerously hospitable’ neighbourhood

Linked through time by geography, economics and people, Oxford Castle and Oxford Canal hold almost a thousand years of history between them. This unique 90-minute guided walking tour of Oxford will take you on a scenic tour through Oxford’s past by way of the Saxon Castle and 18th-century canal. Led by local historian, author and former canal boat resident Mark Davies, this walk will reveal stories from Oxford's past linked to the castle and canal. You'll learn of a Norman Empress’s escape from the Castle, other notable escapes and dramatic executions, the extraordinary feats of Daniel 'damnable' Harris, and the past and present of Oxford’s historic canal boat community.
